I LOVE MEGAN!

Last week two large boxes arrived.

I had not been expecting them.

Then I noticed the return address.

Megan had sent me something!!!!!!!! I was breathless with anticipation!

Megan is also restoring a great big old house, and she also blogs about the adventure.

But what had she sent me????????

ZOUNDS! Megan sent a circa-1950 ceiling fixture by the Porcelier Company!

Megan found it in a basement! She wrote: “I know there’s zero market to resell them here, so I thought it was best used to brighten your day.” Golly! And brighten she did!

Porcelier became famous for the quality of their product, and aesthetic. Most of what the company produced featured gorgeous floral designs. However, around 1950, the company boldly broadened their line, and what Megan found is a high example of this new, innovative direction.

These “last generation” lighting fixtures (Porcelier closed in 1954) are incredibly rare, and, rarer still, to find with their respective components still intact. Thus, you can imagine my considerable glee at opening Megan’s two boxes!

Today, we think of 1950s styling as being influenced by the Atomic age. But that is the late 1950s. The early 1950s are quite a different aesthetic, and this circa-1950 fixture typifies the era at its very very very best.

The shade on the chandelier is stunning. I love love love its design, which is strongly evocative of its era.

Below the shade is the original brass mounting disk, and the original hand-blown glass finial. The latter looks like a miniature tornado! I N C R E D I B L E!

The stem and ceiling canopy are a single piece of molded porcelain. Porcelain! And green! GREEN! It also features brilliant gold trim (which might actually be real gold).

Megan?

YOU ARE FABULOUS!!!!!!!!

I’m just pleased it’s still shining and in one piece. That huge glass shade taunted me for months before I got up the nerve to try and ship it!
