Wanna Time Travel? A Belated Part 2

In 2018, I did two posts about about Phyllis and Louis, here and here. The second post was titled Part 1. And, at long last, I now present part 2!

As I wrote in the first post:

Phyllis and Louis were last in the house in the 1970s, when they first rented the Octagon Bedroom, and then the entire top floor. For $60 a month! Furnished!

Phyllis and Louis were in their early twenties at the time, and with a young son, Nathan. As they told their stories I said: “You were obviously THE coolest people in the whole city.” They smiled at each other, then looked at me, and nodded (a bit bashfully).

Last weekend, Phyllis and Louis returned to the house and with extended family in tow, because of a nearby family reunion.

Nathan, Britta, Campbell, Phyllis, Louis, Deb, Pat.

After most of the extended family departed, this small group remained. Click to enlarge.

From left to right: Nathan (son), Britta (daughter-in-law), Campbell (grandson), Phyllis, Louis, Deb (niece of Phyllis), Pat (sister of Phylis).

Circa-1973. The top floor apartment. Deb again (r) and Phyllis (pregnant with Nathan).

Circa-1975. Nathan! This was taken in the top floor kitchen. Note the radiator. Now, wanna time-travel?

2019! Nathan! Isn’t time-travel a rush!

Circa-1975. Louis and Nathan on the front steps. Ready for another rush?

2019! I would have made them sit in EXACT same 1975 spot!

2019. Three generations! Louis, Nathan, and Campbell. I love images like this!

It was great fun meeting the extended clan!

Ross, you have your fingers on the pulse of the old house passion. Restoring, cherishing, living in beauty rooted in the past and continuing into the future during and after our caretaking gives a sense of belonging in time and place. Moving, evocative pictures! And the Cross House has flowers on the porch steps from generation to generation.

    Amazing!
If these walls could talk! Well, in a sense you make them talk to all of us.
    Thanks for sharing!

What an awesome thing to have. I hope you are compiling all your work and history into a book. It really will be fascinating!

Awww….what a good looking crew! The 3rd floor walls look in pretty good shape back then! And cool 70’s decor!

That is so neat. What a gift for them to be able to see their home improved, not ruined, as happens to many of us who visit our childhood places.

I can’t help notice the sideboard in the photo with Phyllis and her sister. She mentions that the apartment come furnished. I would love to know the history on that piece. The Cross’s? I also like the rocker. Can you enlighten us on the furniture history Phyllis? I also can tell, you weren’t like other moms. You were the COOL mom. Love the photos.
