42! And 43!

The final two stained-glass windows have now been bedded in their wood sashes, primed, and painted gloss black!!!!!!!! They are (drum roll, please) READY TO BE INSTALLED!!!!!!!!

This is #43, a faithful recreation of the only stained-glass window to have gone missing from the house. It will face east in the Sewing Room, across from its original twin. So…stay tuned!

Charles Squires designed the Cross House. He lived a block away at 613 Exchange, pictured here (and extant). See the pair of windows on the second-floor? That was the bedroom, presumably, for Charles Squires. Each window features a stained-glass transom. And that pair are a match to stained-glass #42 and #43 in the Cross House. How cool is that? This is the only instance that I have found of Squires repeating a stained-glass design.

This is such an impressive achievement. And to think when you bought the house, all the windows were in need of repair, and some were falling to bits (literally). Congratulations on fixing 42 windows, and replicating #43! They’re good for another 50 years or more now.

It’s striking how much the front of Squires’ own house resembles the south facade of the Cross House.

If you hadn’t done another single thing since your purchase of the Cross House, the restoration of all those stained glass windows would be impressive enough. You’re the man ~““` look what you have done!

I think I posted this before, but how happy and satisfied do you think he would be to see that so many people are appreciating his hard work from over 100 years ago? Same with Mr. & Mrs. Cross who presumably made all of the final decisions on the finishes in the house.

I like to think Squires adored that design so much that he wanted it in his own room. I guess that story will always be a mystery, but it’s fun to think about.
