Let There Be Light!

In July, 2019, I installed a temporary downspout on the south “niche”. I was not able to bring the downspout down to the ground because…

…a platform, built in 2014, was in the way. The platform allowed the reconstruction of the niche in 2014. The platform though also covered over the dry moat for the basement windows. I left the platform in place all these years as I had planned to finish the siding of the niche. Then, last week, with all the cold and ice, the downspout filled with ice and collapsed. Oh dear. So, it seemed time to install a permanent downspout. But, in order to do this…

…the platform needed to be, at long last, removed, revealing the basement windows for the first time in seven years.

But now? LIGHT! LIGHT! This image was taken late in the afternoon after the sun had passed. Around noon though, there will be actual sunbeams upon the concrete basement floor. I am living for this.

I sincerely appreciate your usage of “living for this.” Hurrah glorious basement windows!
Hurrah! Nothing like natural light.
Ross, I am curious as to why there would be such large windows in the basement. Are they for egress in case of emergency?
Just a guess, but I’m wondering if that was the space where they laundered clothes. You need lots of light and air for drying.
Pam, the room was (and will be) the laundry room.
Beautiful! I’m imagining your cats there, basking in a puddle of light and warmth.
Aaaaaw…ooooooh😍… the light looks wonderful! The WINDOWS are wonderful! What a difference!
It is true, you have brought sunlight into a dark corner of the world.
That really does feel good! Nice work! There is that feeling of a good long exhale, when you didn’t even know you were holding your breath!
Looks like those lovely large basement windows need to go to the Ross spa too. What a treat to have sunlight in the basement. I have been wondering about that platform. Glad you solved the mystery today, Ross. Sorry that you’ll have to rebuild something to be able to side the niche, but it’ll be short lived, as I imagine straight board siding will seem like a dream after so much shingle measuring, cutting and placing.
And, the kitchen windows are sooooo sexy and beautiful – Shiny, reflective, and somehow proud.
I finally understand why that little window in the bathroom is angled- so that it can eke out a little more light above the kitchen bump-out on the other side of the light well. I wonder if it ever had some kind of prismatic glass?
Yay!
Let there be light 💡indeed!🙂
This makes me so happy for you!!
That much light in the basement! I’m so jealous! Awesome for laundry room.
Wow, my house had windows like that and somewhere in time they were bricked up and replaced with glass block. Now I know what it would have looked like.
