Securing Beauty

A short while back, Justina and I hung the FABULOUS gas/electric pendant which Cody found. But, it was soon apparent that there was a problem: wind. On windy days the pendant would ominously swing. Today, Justin and Scott secured it. Ross feeling MUCH better!

Security wires are an excellent idea. If the White House can install them, why not the Cross House.

I had no idea the Carriage House was that close to the Cross House.

I always wondered why the pendant lights at the white house had these drooping chain’s attached to the four corners of the ceiling.

Ross, If you recall the large lanterns at the white House portico are held from wind movement in place by black painted chains. This might be an answer to your problem as I believe they could be quite decorative and add more weight to the large open space of the porch.

George, when I restore the porte-cochère I plan to add black chain. This is just a quickie fix!

OK. Now I’m worried someone with a big-ass doolie truck or passenger van is going to drive through the porte-cochere and take out the light. I am sure you have done the measurements to make sure. But, do me a favor. Measure twice. 🙂

      You’re scaring me, David!

It’s always something, isn’t it. Great solution! 🙂

Oh good idea, you would hate to lose that beautiful light fixture.

I agree with George, I think that some hefty black chains would look really good and actually make the fixture more visible from the street. Are there any indications on the fixture that it might have had chains originally?

Are there two light fixtures there??? Which one is coming down?

    • Ross on March 19, 2022 at 12:08 am

I’m not sure what you mean, Linda. The fixture has three shades.

I discovered your delightful blog about a week ago and I’ve been reading it in my spare time. As a fellow Kansan, I’m quite pleased to see my tax dollars well spent via the Heritage grants. I drive through Emporia every few months so next time I pass through, I’ll have to cruise by to see it all in person.

      Nice to meet you, Heather!

The Heritage Grant is funded by a tiny tax added to every real estate transaction in the state.

      It’s quite clever.
