CH: Day 39

A headache of the Carriage House is that when vinyl siding was installed the vertical sides of every friggin’ window/door was shaved in a straight line. So, the lovely animation of this pantry window on the Cross House was lost. Oh, the horror.

Thus, I have to replace the top horizontal trim (with PVC) so it properly projects a bit, and add to the width of the drip cap. This is necessary for the small center window and the window to the south.

The drip cap. The little ‘bead’ on top is for the siding to rest against. The bead will prevent water from getting behind the window trim. Cool. Under the cap a petite crown trim will be installed. I am short of drip cap and, while such trim is still being made, it is too narrow in width. But Dr. Doug has offered…again!…to come to the rescue and make some 1894-scaled drip cap.
The drip cap cannot be installed after the siding is installed.

That is why I never considered putting vinyl, aluminum or any other kind of siding on my wooden house. They were going to chop off all of my windows. Some guy tried to talk me into some special no maintenance forever paint and when I looked it up it was for concrete and stucco only, not wood.

Wow! Your attention to detail is amazing! So awesome!
One small step to correct each wrong, when these obstacles occur.
I love the attention to detail and righting these wrongs.
Of course, things were done as cheaply as possible in the Carriage House in the 20’s and beyond.
All before Ross entered the scene…..
Very curious to know how things are coming with the Cross House? I’m working on righting all the wrong on a house of the same era and I’ve been pretty discouraged lately because modern resources and so many dead ends.
Hi Richard.
Just keep reading.
Progress has been slow, but steady. Every week the property gets just a tiny bit better!
