CH: Day 46

The exterior of the Carriage House has been extensively altered over time. This is how it looked when I purchased the property in 2014. The circa-1921 Mission-style porch dominates the structure, and visually undermines the turret. It had to go.

The removal of the porch left scar tissue: a full-width line of exposed sheathing. And this is how things have remained ever since.

Until today. The line of exposed sheathing is now covered with ancient siding (thanks, Dr. Doug!). The black line above the siding (right) will soon be covered with 1×3 trim, and crown. That is the job for the upcoming week.

The siding kisses the bottom of the turret, as it would have done in 1894. Soon, the circa-1921 entry will be relocated, and the large window from the parlor will be installed under the turret. I will then finish the siding. All this work has been accomplished via my patented Baby Steps Method™.

I am in awe of how much you have done in such a short period of time. I am so excited that the underlying structure was such that you can relocate the entrance and large window now instead of having to wait. This isn’t a baby step. It is more like a broadjump for this side of the Coach House.

Amazon’s delays and incompetence are impacting my baby steps™ and holding me back. I can’t lock my front gate to work in the front if they are going to deliver. They were supposed to deliver today (waited over a week for this) and at the last minute (after dinner) they say sorry, delay, delivering tomorrow. Well, tomorrow is SUNDAY and I have specified I am “closed” on Sundays but that didn’t stop them the last time and it probably won’t this time either. So I lost all of today and I could lose all of tomorrow too if they do their “before 10pm” and it turns out they show up at 9:58. Or tell me at the last minute they’ll be delivering on Monday. I can’t work in the front unless the gate is locked because of the dogs and I can’t lock the gate if they are going to deliver.

I hope some more Cross House magic works it’s way and you are able to get the transom in time to install it over the window so that side is more or less “done”. Perhaps there will a run on your vintage lighting and you’ll receive an unexpected windfall.
