While this post looks no different than the previous post, it is actually a milestone: I have finished the taping and mudding on this west wall! I can now sand, paint, and install the 1920 trim!!!!!!!!
I see the tape and the patches on the nail/screw heads. That is progress indeed.
I don’t see sash pockets or weights for the window. Is it inoperable? I thought the bottom part could open a bit. Or is it the top part that opens like a transom or hopper?
I know it is a ways off and no need to hurry or anything, but I am interested in the photos and methods you use when you finally get rid of the large floor grate in the foyer. I am facing the same thing in my house. I had a gas leak and the furnace in the crawlspace is now inoperable and never will be again so I have large holes with grates in the floors right over it that I will need to address and I’m not sure how to approach it. I’ll do something temporary which can easily wait until you do yours so I can see what you do. Just asking please don’t skip over that part when the time comes.
I’m sure Ross will come up with something much more classy than plywood and a rug, which would be my temporary fix (that would somehow, probably through inaction, become permanent). I’m looking forward to seeing his skills in action.
*sigh*. Yeah, I figured. I can’t do that. There is no source for the 100+ year old boards for my wooden floor and it would just look as bad as just leaving the grates where they are. (There is a place where they patched in 1949 and it is an eyesore.) I think I will just paint some Luan black and attach it under the floor grates and behind the ones in the wall. I am exploring possibly installing an electric wall heater in that space but I don’t think there are any the right size so I would either be taking out more wall or trying to patch it and I so don’t want to repaint the entire room. I did a faux finish and no way can I match it. Can’t match the floor boards. Can’t match the faux finish painted walls. I am basically up the creek.
Progress!
This is going to be such a warm and welcoming entrance to the house. Can’t wait to see your paint colors.

Mary and Barb,
The oak floor will be properly infilled by The Other Justin. Soon, I hope!
