A Historical Curiosity

Large lighting manufactures would periodically sell off older stock. So, in 1952, Company X would sell off all its old stock from the 1930s or early 1940s.

Smaller lighting companies would then buy this stock. Sometimes they would only put on a new label. Sometimes they would combine parts from various companies. Sometimes they would, say, buy old shades, and attach them to new parts.

The latter seems a likely explanation for three very curious fixtures I found carefully packed in a box in an antique store.

The shades (dramatic!) are 1930s, but the stems…

…are 1950s.

What else might explain this trio?

Yes, somebody could have simply put an old shade on a new stem. But three identical old shades on three identical new stems?

This seems quite deliberate. And quite curious, too!
