One thing I really loved about Pete Buttigieg when he was running for president was his view on abortion.

It was simple.

It was perfect.

It was thus: Every women should have the right to make their own decisions about their body.

And I agree.

If you are a woman and disagree, and think abortion is wrong, guess what? Don’t have an abortion.

But you should not have the right to tell another woman what she can do with her body.

If you are a man and disagree, and think abortion is wrong, guess what? Shut up.

And you should not have the right to tell any woman what she can do with her body.

Here in Kansas, the right for a woman to choose is enshrined in the Kansas Constitution. But, on Tuesday, August 2, the people of Kansas will vote to take away this right by amending the Constitution.

NOTE: In my experience, every single Republican I have met who deeply believes that every fetus should be protected…could care less about actual children. Republicans are really LOUD about protecting every fetus, while doing nothing about protecting children in school from being slaughtered, nothing about providing health care for pregnant women, nothing about providing postnatal care, nothing about providing day care, and on and on and on. Because the actions and policies of the Republican party make it 100% obvious that they are NOT pro-life, it is now also 100% obvious that Republicans only care about controlling the bodies of women. And what did many of these “pro-life” Republicans do during Covid? They refused to wear masks and get vaccinated. Why? “My body! My choice!”

On August 2, I will be proudly voting NO to take away the right of women to make their own choices about their own bodies.

If you live in Kansas, please vote. And please vote NO.

Ross, in this we agree 100% and I must say you state it clearly and elegantly.

I am so sorry for Kansas. I hope this attempt to reduce the women of Kansas to third-class citizens fails.

      Thank you, Mary.

I agree completely. I don’t live in Kansas, however, so I can’t vote in your election. I voted in our primary (early voting last Sunday) for all Democratic candidates. I like “Mayor” Pete; he was my choice in the 2020 primary. I hope he runs in 2024.

The election is Tuesday, August 2nd. While it is a primary election, any Registered voter can and should vote on this constitutional issue.

Oops! I updated the post. Thanks, Doug!

    Well said.

I am so glad I never had to make a decision to have an abortion or not. That said, it’s none of my business who has one. That is between them and God. It is their body and NO ONE should have the right to tell them what to do with it, male or female. They don’t think about the 12 year old girl who was raped by a family member; the woman who was raped by a stranger, etc. Thank you Ross.

Or married couples yearning for a child, loving their baby, until they find out their baby has a genetic abnormality that is not compatible with life. No woman should be forced to carry a baby to term that will be born dead or die upon birth. Not to mention if it dies early, threatens the life of the Mother. This is not anyone’s choice to make but the woman and her husband.

I think what offends me most if all this talk (and) blame all centers on the woman. It takes two, but I hear nothing about birth control for men. I hear plenty of men that think they get a free pass for sex and if the woman gets pregnant it’s all her fault and they have no responsibility, not even for child support. Like they are entitled to unprotected sex for their own personal gratification and it’s women’s job to supply it and they’re responsible for anything resulting from it. A small percentage of men but I read about this attitude all the same. Divorced men that resent having to pay child support. Single men that deny all responsibility despite all proof that they are undeniably the father. Maury Povich made a TV career out of it.

Viagra is covered under health insurance.
      Birth control is not.
SNAP and WIC cover diapers but not tampons or pads. Menstrual products aren’t considered necessary. (Say the men in charge.)

Women are always having to pay out of pocket for what are female necessities. These abortion laws disproportionately penalize poor women.

Men decide these laws. Or rather don’t because the subject is “icky” and embarrassing.

I would like to see a few years with women represented at all levels of the government at at least a majority or close to 50%. That would at least come close to representing the population. In this the U.S. is woefully behind Rwanda, Cuba, Bolivia and Mexico. The United States ties at #76 with… Afghanistan. That’s kinda sorry.

Mary, I agree with everything you wrote.

        BIG hug!

What ^^^she^^^ said. Thanks for expressing it so concisely and succinctly.

BIG hug to Mary, and Ross.

My brother and I had a “discussion” a few months ago on abortion, and he stated that he might consider voting for reproductive rights for women as long as there was a stipulation that any woman who received an abortion would also be sterilized at the same time to avoid a “repeat occurrence”. I asked him if he would also insist that, before sterilizing the woman, the responsible man be located and surgically castrated; he objected to that, stating that the man wasn’t the one killing a baby. It never ceases to amaze me how people see only what they want to see… If, God forbid, my daughter or one of my granddaughters were in a situation where they had to consider an abortion, I pray that the choice would be theirs and not some ignorant politician’s who has nothing at stake in the matter.

    • Ross on June 2, 2022 at 6:20 pm

      That’s so sad, Mike.

Your brother confirms what I wrote: It’s not about being pro-life. It’s about controlling women.

And letting men accept no responsibility.

      • mlaiuppa on June 2, 2022 at 11:26 pm

This is so true. And so sad.

    • mlaiuppa on June 2, 2022 at 11:25 pm

So, your brother is okay with a 12 year old child being sterilized for being molested and raped by a family member resulting in pregnancy? Nothing like heaping child abuse on top of child abuse, but this time perpetrated by the state. Let me guess, this brother is also against vaccines and masks because “his body, his choice”?

What about the couple yearning for a child that must have an abortion because the fetus died and if it isn’t removed the mother will die of sepsis. Sterilization okay for her despite the fact she and her husband did nothing wrong and want to try to have another child? Let me guess. God’s will, no baby for you.

Would he be in favor of the surgical castration of a third strike convicted rapist? Or is it always the woman’s fault? Why do men never realize that claiming this excuse just shows how very little self control and self discipline they have? Seriously? You couldn’t control your illegal impulses because her skirt was above her knee? You saw an ankle? Or the nape of her naked neck? And you just couldn’t control yourself? Your character is so weak that a hint of cleavage drives you to rape?

Even worse is the “boys will be boys” excuse. What comes immediately to my mind? What kind of inept, sorry, loser Father not doing his job must these “boys” have. Take those “boys” away from their inept parents who haven’t instilled ethics and respect in their sons. Send them somewhere (secular) that will drill into them society’s expectations for polite behavior and how to behave like responsible adults and gentlemen.

Mary, you described my brother to a T. God put women on earth to serve men…in any way that the men see fit. His wife just left him after he had yet another affair, and as usual, he has gotten saved again in an effort to win her back. He also quit his job last winter because a (GASP) woman was promoted to be his boss, and he just couldn’t see himself answering to woman. I don’t believe in evolution, but when I look at my brother and others like him, I wonder…are they a missing link? A throw back to some Neanderthal ancestor? And don’t even get started on gun-control…the same he-men who cry big tears over all of the unborn murder victims will fight you tooth and nail for the constitutional right that allows assault weapons to be easily obtained by individuals who then mow down row after row of elementary school children. What a warped mentality… I don’t mean to open another can of worms, and my beliefs are my own… I just can’t add 2 + 2 and get 17 like so many people do these days.

My view of this subject has been very well stated by everyone here, especially Mary & mlaiuppa. I can only add, since this discussion has prompted legislation in several states, I consider this to be a “testing of waters” & can see definite lines being drawn.
A basic human right to one’s personal well being, has been put into question – essentially, on the basis of gender. One can only guess what’s next.
