And…The Other House
This past week has been mostly touching up the inside corner I have been working on for a while at the Cross House. Very, very soon, I will be finished with the corner and, thus, the entire second floor after 695 years of work.
Concurrent to this, is work at my current residence, about 20 miles west of the Cross House. With plans to move into the big house next year, I need to get my current house ready to rent after my departure.
In 2013, I began a massive renovation of the house. I started converting one bedroom into a huge en-suite spa-style bathroom and closet. The bathroom is larger than the adjoining bedroom. But, as this was to be my bathroom, luxury was something I ached for after being through so much deprivation in the previous years, including being homeless in 1996.
I also began the conversion of the one-car garage into another huge spa-style bathroom, attached to what is intended as the master bedroom (now used as my office). This bathroom (and closet) is also crazy big and with a dramatic vaulted ceiling.
The kitchen was also gutted and work began on its rebuilding.
Then I purchased the Cross House in March, 2014. All work abruptly stopped on my current house, and this is how things have stood since. In short, I have spent the last 6+ years living in mothballs.
Sigh.
Thus, I am greatly excited to announce the resumption of work at my current house!
Do you hear the drum roll?
What will be my over-the-top bathroom has its floor. The walls are frame out and sheetrocked. The toilet is installed. The adjacent bidet is not (a bathroom cannot be over-the-top without a bidet, right?). I need a tub. I need a vanity.
Today, I picked up the latter from Lowes.
The vanity makes me smile. This is sooooooooooo not what I would ever pick for the 1894 Cross House but I am excited about it for my house. I like that it does not look like so many modern vanities, and that it has a touch of Hollywood Regency. Cool.
I have been begging Justin to come work at my house, and he might, might, be available in a few weeks. If I can keep him working for a while, the bathroom could be finished well before the year ends.
And Ross will be very happy with his over-the-top bathroom.
Watch this space for updates.

Boy, you don’t make life easy for yourself, do you, Ross… two restorations (or renovation, on the other house?) at once?! Good lord…. no place to just sit back and feel like you’re in a space that’s not currently demanding anything of you!
Wishing you strength,
Beth
Over the top and bathroom are two things that should always go together 😀
Ooh. Your over the top and my over the top are two entirely different things. (Mine is: “Hey, I dusted! Look at that. Enjoy it while it lasts.”). Can’t wait to see the uber-glamorous bathroom.
What an exciting update! It’s been a long 695 years, but the Cross house is worth the effort. I love the vanity and I’m so happy for you that you are getting closer to moving.
It would be completely wrong to accuse you of shirking, Ross! Just feeding and cleaning up after the cats would wear me out.
