Before. After.

The other day I was organizing my vast storage vaults when I pulled this pair of sconces out. When did I buy them? I had no idea but kinda think ages ago. Every time I would look at the sconces in their little box I would experience a low-level panic. How did all the parts go together? WHAT kind of finish was that and how could I restore it? Were all the pieces there? EEK! Too many questions! And, so, back on the shelf they would go. But the other day I thought: Enough! Do SOMETHING with the poor dears. And I did. Wanna see? Scroll way down.

Golly. There are two crystal beaded strands which drape from the top to the bobeches. Lovely. And there are thirteen crystal drops on the bobeches. And an incredible crystal “sock” over the bulb.

The sconces, as it developed, are silver-plated with, it seems, their original protective lacquer. On the back plates, the silver has nonetheless developed a patina. But I cannot remove the lacquer to polish the silver without also removing the cream painted accents. So, I only polished the arms and candle cups (see second image). I love the results. They look vintage…but cared for.

And when lighted? Wow! The crystal “socks” throw dramatic patterns on the walls.

Such an unusual find— the lacquered silver pieces you have restored have been some of my favorites— of those you have featured! Fascinating details!

Do you use a special cleaner that wont hurt the lacquer?
