Do You Value Reality? Part III

Since 2013, Democrats have been developing plans to improve border security and create a more humane way of immigrating. And guess what? Since 2013, Republicans have been blocking all such attempts. Just recently, Biden proposed a “$14 billion package that would send emergency funding to the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies that work on Mexico border security.”
House Republicans would not even consider it. But why when they are raging about the border? Why?
To harm Democrats.
Recently, I two did two posts (here and here) stating that I anticipate the #1 issue Republicans will use to attack Democrats will be our border with Mexico.
Everything though that Republicans will assert will be…a lie. Even these two words are a lie: “Open borders”. Because there’s no such thing in America.
As I have learned however, Republican voters are allergic to truth and reality. They fully accept the most outlandish lie as long as the lie is about Democrats.
Fox news and Republican pundits push out utter bullshit 24/7 and Republican voters eat this up as if it is filet mignon.
Today, Fox did the unimaginable. They told the truth:

I truly think some Republicans (the Trump cult ones) are either mentally impaired, extremely gullible or just plain stupid.
I found two handguns in my parents house when I was taking care of them. They both have dementia and I didn’t think it was safe for the guns to be in the house. So I found an online gun forum to post to ask if they were loaded and how to unload them and take them apart so they would be safe. I got plenty of helpful advice and as long as I was registered I continued to read and occasionally answer posts. I stuck to the recipe and general off topic section, which is supposed to be no gun or political talk but politics still invades it and the moderators do nothing. Because it is a right wing gun forum. (I do suspect there may be one or two Democrats there as they seem to be the sane ones but like me they keep a low profile.)
Right now they are talking about that convoy to Texas about the border. The FBI is infiltrating, they’re taking photos of participants to create a file of IDs. False flag BS. They buy into all of the conspiracy nutjob stuff. They’ll post something and it’s from Breitbart or some other right wing website to support their delusion. A few times I’ve debunked a few things but it doesn’t last long.
Yes they talk open borders, busloads of immigrants and are always posting news articles where an immigrant has beaten or robbed or something. I think there was one post about the litter boxes in schools for the students that identify as cats. That sort of insane rubbish.
I stay because there actually are some very nice people there, except for the guns. There is the bible quoting guy for whom the answer to everything is some sort of bible verse. There is a nice lady but her tag line is something about you want socialism, you know the next step is communism, right?
They wish each other happy birthdays and anniversaries, offer sympathy for lost ones or health issues and are extremely supportive when it comes to animals, especially dogs.
It’s like most are normal and nice except for this one mental impairment they have when it comes to politics. I liken it to religion. When you are raised Southern Baptist you aren’t very likely to convert to Hinduism. They were all raised Republican and either live in a Republican state or in a Republican area of a blue state.
It does give you an insight into the “other side”. I mostly keep my mouth shut as I don’t want them to confirm that I am a progressive Democrat so I don’t say anything about politics or Trump. (It is so tempting) But yeah, there are a few that believe he won in 2020 and that Jan 6 was a bunch of peaceful tourists on a tour and of course all of this is a liberal witch hunt against Trump designed to remove him from the ballot and deny people their right to vote. In other words, it is the Democrats that are the authoritarian state and Biden the dictator. Except he is Sleepy Joe or Brandon. Plenty of diaper jokes.
This coming year is going to be tough to keep my mouth shut but I stay because I think it is important to expose myself to the “other side” rather than just live in a bubble echo chamber where I am only exposed to what I already believe. That is how these right wing nutjobs live. They only listen to OAN, Breitbart and Alex Jones then parrot the idiocy they hear as the truth because it is the only truth they allow themselves to be exposed to because it confirms what they already believe. Fox is now the liberal lame stream media because it no longer tows the Trump line. Fox is now a traitor network to be shunned.
They’re not demons but some of them are a bit stupid. You wouldn’t believe the discussion on the “dark side” of the moon. One guy believed one side of the moon was always dark. I tried to explain the difference between the far side (that we never see) and the dark side, eclipses, etc. He never did get it. How the far side could be in full sunlight when the moon is between the earth and the sun, making the side we always see the dark side. He could not grasp the concept.
All I hear them complain about is how much it costs to feed a family at McDonald’s. They don’t understand GDP, unemployment, inflation or economics. Or the greed of free market capitalism. They’ve forgotten Trump’s trade wars and how he totally screwed up Covid or the greed of the free market post Covid, how the Republicans drove up the national debt or Trump pulling out of the nuclear deal with Iraq and how that effects what is happening now in the Middle East. All they know is the cost of a burger and Biden is president so it is all his fault. I don’t even think they have noticed the price of gas has come down.
You are very brave my dear. I cannot listen to it anymore, as it fills me with a debilitating sense of doom. My whole life I have spent respecting the differences between other people, whether it be their views on religion or politics or economics. How could I not? I myself am different and therefore if I want respect for myself I should give that to others. But I cannot do it with this hateful lot. They may bake apple pies for church bazaars and volunteer for food drives, but I believe their underlying attraction to these lies will lead to a much darker purpose.
Since 2015, and this rise of Trumpism, I have struggled with my own nature of accepting others. But since about 2018, I just could not do it anymore for this lot. Despite how nice these people appear to be, I believe they are threat to civil society, not just because they know no truth but because they refuse to entertain it even when their nose is rubbed in it. They literally embrace falsehoods; I believe because it feeds their inner biases.
“Truly, whoever can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities. If the God‐given understanding of your mind does not resist a demand to believe what is impossible, then you will not resist a demand to do wrong to that God‐given sense of justice in your heart.”
And what better example of the above can you find than their own obsession with guns? A hundred years of data will not sway their views on this.
And this scares me to no end. It reminds me in some regards to that German phenomenon that triggered such atrocities during WWII. That somehow all the ills of Germany were the result of immigrants, Jews, others. I don’t know if the average German justified the things they did to Jews, LGBTQ, Catholics, etc – I suspect most Germans weren’t – but I bet the ones that did looked a lot like Trumpsters. Nice on the outside, ignorant and cruel on the inside. A chip on their shoulder, and to foment to attack others that aren’t in their “tribe”. A tool for destruction.
I admire people like yourself and Ross, who will continue to reach to them. I cannot seem to do it. Keep up the good work.
