Hidden Glamour

...

Tonight, it was a dark and stormy night. I ain’t kidding.

As the heavens raged, I received a text from a friend.

A house was being demolished tomorrow. He knew I had always admired it.

My heart felt crushed.

Another text: the house is open. Wanna see inside?

It was pitch black outside, save the dramatic streaks of lighting. Rain dashed against my windows. The house shook from thunderous roars.

Yet my only thought was: are the batteries in my flashlight still good?

Of course I would dash out into a dark and stormy night to look at a soon-to-be-lost house!

Of course!

And look what I found!

Zounds!

The house had already been stripped. Sigh.

But, just as I was leaving, I saw that a few dropped ceiling tiles were missing. I shined my flashlight into the dark abyss.

And gasped.

For, above me, was INCREDIBLY high-style circa-1940s wallpaper and STRIPED ceiling paper! OMG! This was extraordinary chic for the era! I mean, I would expect to see this in NYC or London, but in a speck of a town in Kansas???????? STRIPED ceiling paper?

The house was 1880s, but was obviously redecorated to-the-nines in the 1940s. It must have been IT, and quite the sensation in the small town.

Oh, how I would love to time-travel.

My wife and I just removed about 5 layers of wallpaper in our 1900 four square in Kansas City, MO and one of the layers looked remarkably like the floral wallpaper in your image. We both loved it. Small world!

Ross, the batteries in my flashlight are always good! And I keep it in my purse along with a mini screwdriver, scissors, and a good knife. I took out the snakebite kit when I moved up here from Kansas! Lol!

The floral paper is amazing by itself, but that striped ceiling paper is out-freakin’-rageous! Sooooo jealous of your nocturnal foray into the past!
