Inchin’ Along

TODAY. I got the ‘return’ wall (north) painted, and have been cobbling together bits-o-trim from the basement and other areas.

The entry to the library. This was the original location…almost…of the door from the stair hall into the library, which I previously posted about in some detail. Of note here are the aforementioned cobbled trim bits. See the base plinth blocks?

I stole these from the 1894 Octagon Bedroom closet. But I had to make them longer. They will look fine once fussed over. And I am very good at fussing.

The vertical trim to the right retains its ‘cherry’ faux bois finish, so it was originally in the library, possibly the inside trim of this opening. My new shelving made inside trim unnecessary. The vertical trim to the left…

…comprises two narrow strips of 1894 trim. Each had been reduced in width. and were in the basement. The dark piece was from the library originally. I do not know what is under the white paint, so do not know where this piece came from. Godsend Eric ripped them down for me so they could be joined to recreate the original 5.5-inch width. After some fussing, one will never know.

The top horizontal trim is oak, so it is from the 1894 stairhall. It was likely from the 1894 Library door trim as all the other 1894 hall trim remains in situ. All these bits will get a new faux bois ‘oak’ finish.

Great to see this view into the library and all the details coming together. This really provides a feel for the entirety of this space – love it!!!!!
I have done that exact same thing, robbed trim from inside a closet.
I love seeing all of the trim around the library door. Can’t wait to see the faux bois restored but take your time. Your baby steps are looking mighty fine.
Lots of fussing going on. But thats a good thing. It keeps you motivated. Looks great.
The textures of the original trim add such a timeless feel to that door opening. Magical.
The peakaboo view into the library that showcase the mantle, the pendants and the delicious color scheme is just fabulous.
I think the Cross House may be the biggest and most expensive jigsaw puzzle ever…. Love the progress, Ross!
Coming along beautifully! Also, what is that material in the threshold of the library door?
I know it’s not done, but that return wall corner looks so crisp! Amazing work piecing together all the bits of trim – it’s going to look fantastic when you’re finished!
Given that the library door is not quite in its original position, will there be any lincrusta on the “return” wall?
Yes, there will be, Brian!
how will you do it? do you have to steal it from somewhere else?
