Small Excitements

It was proving hard to get the last of the original shellac off. If you look at the top rail (left to right) you can see the old shellac to the left, while I got most of it off to the right. Via a lot of sanding.

My mind ached at the amount of work this was gonna take.

Then I thought: Would the new shellac coat just cover all this?

The answer: yes. And gorgeously!!!!!!!!

Ross happy.

The new color is gorgeous. Yeah, you can just put it over. That is the beauty of shellac.

    I love shellac.

I’ll be bringing my Dad’s childhood dresser home tomorrow. I have the drawers already. I started working on it in their garage while they were on the last cruise of their lifetimes but I didn’t finish. I haven’t finished the drawers either. Just one. But I really can’t wait to get started working on it again.

That door is going to be so beautiful. It will blend in with the faux bois but still be different to reflect the history of the house.

You now you can eat off that door, right? Shellac is food safe.

That’s great, eliminates a lot of extra work. You need some good luck like that about now, considering the work you have to do on the carriage house. But you’ll getter done.

Congratulations! It looks lovely. Can’t wait to see it in the library — and Bat Girl will be happy to have a door.

I think I spotted a missing word in this paragraph: “It was proving hard to get the last of the original shellac off. If you look at the top rail (left to right) you can the old shellac to the left, while I got most of it off to the right. Via a lot of sanding.”

I think it should be something like “you can SEE the old shellac,” or the appropriate verb of your choice.

    Nice!
Once the door is shellacked, be sure to rub the finish out. Otherwise it will be uneven and look funny. Paste wax and 00 or 000 steel wool are your best bet. Just take it easy and a little at a time and the results should be great (drop dead gorgeous, actually). And the wax topcoat will make the shellac a lot more resistant to wear than just the shellac alone.
