VISITOR!
But there is more to the story. Kendra purchased a fabulous house, likely by Charles W. Squires, and which I posted about in 2021. Kendra would like to return dignity to the long abused house so, obviously, I adored her immediately.
Her new house is just around the corner from the Cross House, and I am looking forward to posting updates on her progress.
Let us all send Kendra a big SQUEE!!!!!!!!

Yay, Kendra! I’m looking forward to updates. Those homes by Charles W. Squires are amazing.
I think I remember that. Was that a corner house that was huge and going to be torn down or bought by some local investor big wig and turned into something abominable? I remember there was a fight with the city and it had huge pillars on the front.
It’s a different house. You’re likely remember the fight over Plumb Place, the home built by Emporia founder Preston B. Plumb. Plumb moved to Kansas to support the “Free State” movement during the civil war, and he was later a U.S. senator representing Kansas. His home is one of the showplaces of Emporia. To find out more information on the house, search on “Plumb Place Emporia Kansas,” and on Preston B. Plumb to learn more about his life and accomplishments.
I’m reading his biography now, which is why all of this information is top of mind to me. He’s a fascinating person, and I’m learning a lot from reading about him.
That is great news! Best wishes to Kendra and your growing network of local old-house enthusiasts!
Could Kendra possibly have bought it now for $18k? If so, what an incredible bargain. A house like that, here in Tacoma WA, even as a “heavy fixer”, would go for $250k+! Congrats to her for wanting to save a grand old lady. My house here is from 1890, a “painted lady” Victorian (9 colors). All her efforts will be worth it ( even if it takes longer than planned – it always does ).
Hi, Jon,
The house was purchased by a development company for 18K. They repaired the fire damage and other stuff, and re-listed the house. That’s when Kendra purchased it.
Do you have it painted in all nine colors?
Yes, I do. 3 shades of blue for trim, 2 of yellow for the body, purple window sash, teal, orange, and coral accents. It might sound like too much, but I think it’s bright but tasteful. Everyone who comments on it to me likes it – ones who don’t like it never say, so I get lots of positive feedback! And every time I come home, I get a little hit of pleasure.
How wonderful to have a like-minded person living so close by!
I’m so happy for you Ross!
Was Kendra’s house ever mentioned in Old House Dreams? Have you featured her house before?
I’m so happy you have had a visitor and someone who lived so close by!
Sandra, I include a bright blue hyperlink to the house in this post!
I know. Duh…..
I felt like such an idiot after I posted that I remembered later that you like the post before and I looked it up. What a nod I’m haHaha!
Hi, Kendra! **Emporia native, waves from Nebraska** I’m always happy to see someone rescue one of these beautiful homes. Emporia has so many, and it’s heartbreaking to see one fall down that could have been saved. Thanks for taking on another Squires house!
Hi Barb!! Happy New Year!!
Hi, Sandra! Happy New Year to you!
It’s always so nice to see when you posted. I like to say hi when you do.
Welcome Kendra! It will be wonderful to see this charming house become your home. 🌻
Hi Ross, how about a monthly update on the Tin house and the Strong house. I love the Cross house, but this is about restoring Ross. So, any work you do is interesting and appreciated.
Hi, Tim.
I just did an update.
