The Wonders of Windex
Most of the basement windows in the Cross House were replaced when motel rooms were created in the basement during the early 1950s. The new windows were steel casements. I have never cleaned them. I know, amazing. Anyway, today I went at the window under the north porch. Tragically, I forgot to take an AFTER image. But it looks much better!
I also cleaned the west window in the tower basement room, which is tucked behind the limestone lattice. Before, the window was so dirty that you could not see through it. Now? It looks like there is no glass! I am agog at the difference. Whoee!!!!!!!!

I love that house but I would never imagine living in its basement with views like that, it must have felt very oppressive. Who thought it would make a nice view to look out through these tiny metal grates? Those apartments must have commanded much less rent than those on the second floor…
At least you could have fresh air and the window is above ground level so that you can look out. Both not always common in basement appartments (at least in Germany).
