I’ve Added a Sun Porch!

I decided to add a sun porch to the Cross House! Yes, it is kinda primitive but I though this would prove an exciting counterpoint to the house! So, do you like it? I love it!

OK. I am obviously not being serious!

What I rigged up is a sun screen to keep the south sun from baking me while I work, and baking the paint (newly applied paint will blister in direct sun on hot days, as I have painfully learned). And today it was 84-degrees.

While waiting for mortar to repoint the north chimney, I shifted focus to finishing the painting of the second-floor south facade. On Thursday, Justin will help erect some mini-scaffolding so the top of the octagon tower can be reached but until then work can begin on what is easily accessed while standing on the porch roof.

The shingles to the right of the window, down low, were a mess. Lots-o-splits and nails, and the bottom ones were punky. I could, of course, just patch all this and move on. But…but…

…sigh, I just cannot. Some days it is hard being me.

I hate to say it, but I fear the camouflage clashes with both the old and new colourways of the house. I’m SO glad your sunroom is temporary.

Sun Porch-good idea, with no trees to shade you, that sun is horrible. You just don’t rest do you Ross? Of course that’s why you have accomplished so much.

My current client is a bit like you Ross, he just likes things to be right, even though it takes longer and is more expensive. In the long run however, it is just the right thing to do. In ten years time, when you are not having to re-do all this work, you’ll be so grateful for the fact that some days, it is hard being you.

Damn sun! Fucking shingles! Have you planted trees between the house and carriage house yet?? This is the best time of year. I don’t want you up there repainted when we are both 70!

The more I read your Blog, the more I realise that the Preservation Hell you so often speak about is an endless wall of shingles in need of replacing.
