The Pan…IS IN THE HOUSE!!!!!!!!
My bathroom will be in the original servant’s room in the SE corner of the second-flloor.
The room may have been converted into a studio apartment in 1929. Note the word may.
I do know that it became a community kitchen for people living in the house during, at least, the 1960s through to the house being closed up in the early 1990s.
A part of the ROSS MOVE-IN PUNCH LIST is installing a shower in the house.

The non-original closet in the corner has to go, as the shower will be in this corner. Today, I removed the door, trim, and door frame. (Methinks the door, trim, and frame are from the original closet in the room, which was reduced in size in, methinks, 1929.) Tomorrow, the closet walls will be demolished. Ross excited. And then (drum roll, please)…

…the crazy big 5-foot x 5-foot shower pan will be installed. I am SOOOOO excited about having a big shower. And methinks I SOOOOO deserve a big shower.

And this is the 60-inch-wide vanity I am considering. Blue! Carrara marble! I like it, a lot, but do not love it. There were two vanities I did love, and passionately, but they were twice the price. So, I am OK with a more modest…attraction.
You will note that my choices are SOOOOO not period-correct for the house.
“Why isn’t Ross doing an 1890s-style bathroom with an encaustic tile floor, high-tank toilet, and clawfoot tub? What the fuck is wrong with him?”
Now, first of all: Language!
Second, the original (and only) bathroom on the second floor will be, pretty much, restored to an 1890s look. The original porcelain geometric tile floor will be restored. The tall wood wainscoting (about 5-feet-high), removed about 20 years ago, will be recreated. In 2019, Mary found a period-correct marble vanity, and Celeste and Cindy drove many hours to deliver it. That was all SOOOOO much fun!
Third, y’all know how, ahh, particular I am about respecting the historical narrative. By this, I mean that I want visitors and future owners to have zero doubt about what is original and what is not.
Fourth, y’all know that I do not want the house frozen to an early 1890s timeline, but rather to reflect the passage of 127-years. Nobody will walk into my bathroom and question its build-out date. A decade from now people will, no doubt, look at the bathroom and say: “Oh, that’s SOOOOO early 2020s!”
The room will also have an elongated toilet and a bidet. I also love the sun POURING in through the two huge huge windows.
Also, I am thinking about some ridiculously over-the-top wallpaper.

I might use the way way way crazy and way way way fabulous 1970s peacock wallpaper purchased for the first-floor powder room. (If you have not read about the famous paper, please read here. It is a fun read.) While I did not initially have enough of the paper for even the small powder room, I was later able to acquire more rolls and methinks I might now have enough for my bathroom. Because the paper is such a powerful reminder of my teenage self, having it in my own private bath will be particularly delicious.
I think it will be a glorious bathroom. And, when Covid is over, y’all are invited to take a celebratory shower with me.
The shower will fit us all. And, if you are modest, you can wear a strategically-placed peacock feather. Or two.

Ha ha ha…I would need 2 or 3 entire peacocks to even strategically cover myself!
This is getting exciting now!
It is so fun getting to see you master the interior of this old girl.
And you DO deserve that wallpaper in your bathroom!
I just had to laugh and agree – right now I’d need several also! 🙂
That wallpaper is almost as fabulous as you! You deserve to have it in your own private shower. It will make you happy every time you look at it — and you deserve to be happy, too. Can’t wait to see what direction you go.
The peacock feather paper is so amazing – even if there wasn’t enough for a whole room or wall, I’d somehow make it work. As I write this, I’m turning it on it’s side and can see it run horizontally through a room, separating hues or perhaps, a glorious frieze atop a single wall in an alcove.
💜 Can’t wait to see this room come together!
Hi Ross,
I loved that wallpaper when you first told the tale of it. I can see it in this private bathroom and as Barb and Linda say, you deserve it in your own space where you can admire it daily.
It’s going to be great watching this progress.

I was just about to say it’s going to take way more than 3 measly peacock feathers to cover ME (or at least, as the good folks from Monty Python would say, my ‘naughty bits’), but I see that Linda A. has already beaten me to it!
I want to visit and walk through your glorious house, Ross… but I can pass on the celebratory shower. How about instead we just throw a party in your parlor, and we’ll bring a 1905 Edison cylinder machine and crank out some very popular tunes!
Hey Ross – Wow! I can’t wait to see the bathroom when it’s done. I’m sure it’s going to amazing!!! 🙂
I love that wallpaper. It looks like the mod version of Arthur Silver’s 1887 Hera design.
Love, love, LOOOVVVVEEE that wallpaper and also think the navy cabinet will look wonderful with it.
I only read the headline and was puzzled… I thought of the Greek god “Pan”! Well, Wikipedia says “In the late 19th century Pan became an increasingly common figure in literature and art.” So why not? Ha, ha…
Greetings from old Europe!

Well, Ross, you may not be in love with the blue cabinet, but it sure does complement the peacock wallpaper. That means your private bath will be spectacular. Good job!
I love the sink and think I’ll be great. And yes, you deserve the big shower, but no, I won’t be joining you as that wouldn’t be a good idea for all others! Can’t wait to see the finished pics. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
