Pretty Attic Making

The third floor has its own forced-air heating and cooling. The fan-coil unit was in the attic, laid down horizontally. It was, thus, not easily accessible, and it dripped water, damaging the ceiling. Obviously, something had to be done. Today, Modern Air hauled the fan unit out from level 4 to level 3, and stood it vertically. I will build a closet to enclose the unit. This new position will make future service effortless, and changing the filter. I am a bit obsessed about such things.

Level 4: the attic. This is the only space in the house I have never cleaned. And, obviously, it is a mess. When Modern Air is done I will haul my old ass into the space with a shop vac and clean clean clean. I will also redo the insulation and lay down 1×12 boards as a nice floor. I do so like an immaculate attic.

Once you are done cleaning, the Cross House will “beam” a little bit more.
I love a good shop vac session of cleaning, so satisfying. It shocks me how big the Cross house is! There is so much space.
Big fan of floor boards in an attic. I have them for almost all of mine but wouldn’t you know the one 6 inch space where I didn’t have them was where I put my foot through the ceiling of the kitchen. All repaired now and a board nailed over that spot so it won’t happen again. I insulated before putting boards down and was lucky to do most of it in tongue and groove. My parent’s neighbors were taking their old fence down and most of the board were perfectly good. Makes an awesome attic floor. When I ran out, plywood. Not as fun but gets the job done.
Once clean and with a floor that attic can offer plenty of storage, You can slide a box over toward the eaves and still have room in the middle to stand.
Excited the level 3 is getting some attention now. I love that “ballroom.”
Thanks to a post of yours, I now regularly dust the tops and sides of my furnace and water heater, and I keep the floor and joists vacuumed (the inside of the closet is unfinished). I don’t think the service guys notice, but I know it’s tidy. But I’ve lived here 30 years, and I’ve NEVER even been in my attic, let alone cleaned it. You are adding more things to my project list. And I’ll feel good when that one is done, too.
Love it so satisfying to get some of those corners done ! At 82 lol
I suggest you do your cleaning before the weather changes. That attic will probably be well above 100 degrees when it gets warm out.
By the way, did you notice that someone painted the attic. Do you have any idea why?
About ten years ago, I had a fire in my house that damaged only part of the house. There was smoke damage and part of the process of restoring and rebuilding was to seal all the wood that had suffered smoke damage so the odor wouldn’t linger. This looks like the same paint and as I understand, there was a fire in the attic at one time but Ross could tell us for sure!
It is usually the finished rooms in a house that get the most attention, and understandably so; for me, it is always very satisfying to “connect” with the less-seen areas of my old house, like the cellar, crawlspace, and attic. Here, I can get up-close and personal with the structure of the house in a way that standing in a dining room or a entrance hall can’t match. Seeing the bones of the house layed bare and being able to touch them…it’s almost a physical connection with the house’ spirit. Examining saw marks in the oak timbers, or trowel marks in mortar; finding half-bricks lying where they were dropped after being cut to fit a space in the foundation wall in 1886…those moments are more satisfying to me than admiring a chandelier or new wallpaper.
Adding to the to-do list. But you will feel better when the attic is clean. 🙂
