Shopping!

In order to move into the Cross House, I will need to purchase a good refrigerator. So, I look forward to visiting the local GE showroom. Which Travis recommeded.

I always begin my major appliance shopping online. First reading reviews for the top brands and models, then going to their websites and reading up on the specifications of the different models.

Everyone has their own preferences and restrictions.

In my old 1949 kitchen the place for the refrigerator is recessed but pretty generous so width and depth are not an issue. But there is a cabinet above the refrigerator which I so do NOT want to remove. So every time I buy a refrigerator I end up sanding the bottom a bit more and more to give me another half inch and then another. I think at some point I will no longer be able to get a refrigerator short enough for the space. They just seem to be making them taller and taller.

I don’t like ice makers as I rarely use it and it just takes up valuable real estate in the freezer. I also don’t like that door dispenser stuff as it clutters the lines of the door. My parents love both of those things and use them all the time.

I like their deli drawer and wanted one. Even ordered a refrigerator with one. I found one model that was small enough with the interior I wanted. It was a KitchenAid. And I bought one. And I waited over a year and still they couldn’t deliver one. Finally my old refrigerator died and I had to go to Home Depot and buy whatever piece of %#$^#$ they had in the warehouse that could be delivered the fastest. I hate it. And wouldn’t you know. The day after I canceled the refrigerator they couldn’t deliver, I get a notice that they are back in stock. Well, maybe. Who knows? I just couldn’t wait to find out.

    I really HATE my refrigerator.

Take your time Ross. If there’s a showroom, go check them out. It’s a big ticket item and you don’t want to live with regret, hating your refrigerator every time you open the door. Like I do.

I highly recommend the 1933 GE Monitor Top. Our 90-year-old refrigerator has been in continuous use since new and we are the third owners. The only repair we have had to make is replacement of the relay switch. These refrigerators were built to last and use very little electricity in comparison to newer models (yes; we tested it!). The only drawback is a tiny freezer compartment (and the fact that it has to be defrosted on occasion) but a modern (1950’s) chest freezer will solve that problem. Happy shopping!

I LOVE that image of the showroom. Wow it would be so great to go to one like that!

We have had good luck with our GE Profile and we have a 39 year Whirlpool that has only needed one repair.

We are lucky enough to have a small, family appliance store in nearby Pelham, and we have learned to shop there, even if we have to pay a bit more than at a sale at the big box stores. They always give us great advice. The one time I didn’t take their advice was a mistake. Maybe there is a similar, knowledgeable shop near Emporia.

    Happy shopping!
