CH: Day 154

See the wonky hot water heater exhaust vent, upper right? To the left of the window is a vertical wall void where the chimney was.

See the wonky hot water heater exhaust vent, upper left?

See the wonky hot water heater exhaust vent, upper left? It’s a trick question because THE VENT IS GONE! Note, too, that the lap-siding under the right window has a turpentine mix applied.

VENT IS GONE!

Redoing the vent was a sudden decision. Poor Eric. But today, with great gallantry, he smiled at my can-we-do-this thought and dived into the task. The effort proved somewhat comedic as we kept having to hunt for the right screws, the right bit, silver duct tape, metal strapping, and more vent. The latter proved comic gold as I had to get more, which came in 2-foot lengths, and each was kinda flat. Each side needed to be sorta kinda slotted into the other side to form a tube. Eric and I had no idea of how to do this so we fussed and fretted and scratched our respective heads until…GADZOOKS…we achieved slotted. We let out victory cries!

Then, while trying to insert one length into another, the latter tube would come apart.

We were dashed upon the rocks of despair.

Bravely, heroically, we again achieved slotted and used blue tape to hold the damn tubes together.

After additional bumbling (including…don’t ask…moving a crystal chandelier), we were finally able to redo the whole thing so the vent was INSIDE the attic and INSIDE the vertical wall void where the chimney was. Soon, the vent will come through the roof where the old chimney was.

And…drum roll, please…wonky will have been vanquished.

Great decision. The exterior has a much cleaner look now.

I’m thinking Eric misses being on the rooftops a bit and is especially enjoying the view. Probably didn’t take that much arm twisting to get him to go back up.

Turpentine! Soon it will be sinking nails and putty time. Then paint.

YAY! Notice soon to be fulfilled and hopefully Ross left alone to get done what he thinks should get done.

Looking back on this year you have accomplished a lot, even if it wasn’t quite the same list as when you started this year.

What’s done is done, and obviously there’s a budget but seems like getting a power vent water heater and running the PVC through the first floor sill would be a superior solution.

Mark! The heater came with the Carriage House and had never been installed. So, there was no way I was gonna spend $1K to buy a side vent heater!

I did install a side vent heater in the big house.

Ross… you made me laugh with the comment about holding it together with blue tape! I find blue painter’s tape to be extremely helpful… in 1,000 ways not associated with painting. Fairly inexpensive, not too hard to work with and used as a temporary set of hands… comes off with off any extra cleanup. Win-Win! If the color does not work for you>>> find it in green! Congrats on all you are getting done! and so glad you found someone who likes roofing.

Sounds like quite an ordeal, but success at last. Looks much, much better and no more wonky. I know you said not to ask, but I can’t help it. You moved a crystal chandelier? Or is that a story for another time? And soon paint under the window. Eric is a big help, sounds like you both had fun in spite of everything.

Excellent use of an empty vent, better roofline view. The manner to get there though was plagued with… er… flatness. Hooray Eric, you delivered!

Ooh. It made for a lot of extra work, but it will look SO much better. And every little bit of better adds up, as the members of your fan club can attest. Bravo!
