The fact that the glass shades have….survived !! Always so nice to see! Love the shape!
You can tell they were designed to “direct”, rather than “diffuse” the
light. We forget the way people 100 years ago viewed artificial/”electrical ” light.
Thats why Dame Maggie Smith’s character, the Dowager Countess, when walking through Downtown Abbey uses her hand like an umbrella to shield herself from the light. They viewed it as foreign.
I LOVE those shades. Sooo cool!

Architectural Observer: perhaps the designer of the Sputnik looked up, and was inspired by this 1910 beauty?
