A Holey Departure

All the holes made to the 1990s sheetrock in the dining room of the carriage house have now been infilled. I am intensely excited that, after seven patient years, the room is no longer deformed and will soon be the large, elegant, and rectangular room as it was originally, after suffering from being turned into an L-shaped room in the 1980s. Oh, the horror.

It is also a room without a view.

Well, much of that can be remedied.

You could have that one window reproduced easily and replace the the side windows with it.

The window looks out on the wall to what? I assume, something you own? You could have an impressionistic mural done, then hang semi-opaque curtains on those windows only giving a hint of the “view.” It would give the impression of distance.

If you own the eyesore you could always demolish it or relocate it to a different part of the property. But if you did….would the new view be any better than an implied landscape through some lace or semi-sheer curtains?

Whatever you end up doing, those chocolate brown cafe curtains need to GO! (Chocolate being the most polite word choice and not my first. Number two, actually.)

I would not reproduce the leaded glass to the adjacent sashes. This would alter the historical integrity of the house, something I normally avoid as a general rule. I like keeping things original.

The window looks directly to my neighbor. And at their shingled wall. I’m kinda amused by the…’view’. I often smile.

I’m at least glad they don’t have a window looking directly back at me.

      The curtains are not mine.

The three windows don’t seem to match, like panes were replaced at some point. Are you sure the two other upper side sashes don’t show signs of leaded glass that was replaced? It looks like the right upper has a solid sheet of thicker glass with a bevel all around the edge but the left upper is thinner and doesn’t, it’s just plain glass. It’s a little hard to tell but none of them seem to match.

It’s a shame that is your neighbor’s wall but fortunate there is no window there looking back at you. Wow, you have very small easements between buildings. We have to have at least 4-6 feet of a set back from the property line, depending on which city zone we are in. I can build a fence on the property line but a building has to have a minimum 4 foot setback where I am. I think it is 8 feet in my parent’s area.

I didn’t think the curtains were yours. I’m sure once the room is done you’ll find something either more period appropriate or that will allow light while disguising the (lack of) view.

The brown cafe curtains were $1 per panel, and keep me from feeling like I’m walking around in a fish bowl. I have to walk past this bank of windows to get to/from the only shower in the house, and it would be rather awkward for the neighbors to see me nearly nude before we’ve actually even met.

There’s that, and I was rather loathe to hang my expensive crushed velvet drapes from West Elm in a room which was not being done sheetrocked, taped, and mudded.

The “dirty” work in this room is just about done, and it will be wholly transformed here very soon.

Looking forward to seeing those drapes in that room. They will definitely be more decorative than the cafe curtains.

Cody! You are so resourceful & thoughtful!

Ross! I’m so happy the 1980’s L-shaped area is gone & the room is a rectangle again!

      He is, Sandra!

      Me, too!

That is a nice size room! It will look so nice to finally have the walls sanded and painted. Right now, there are so many projects going on, and nothing is really finished, it will be wonderful to have atleast one beautiful room to look at….and use.

Question….I was wondering, why does it seem like the carriage house was stripped of all its doors, lighting etc. Didn’t Bob and his family live in it at one time ??

Cody, I love West Elm!!! Lots of curtains in my little 1952 ranch are from there.
