Ages ago, I purchased a single sconce. Normally, I never do this as single sconces are a hard sell. I can sell pair, or a set of three, four, and any variation. But not singles.

But this single sconce was designed by the esteemed Oscar Bach, so it seemed foolish to pass it up.

And so Oscar sat in storage. Weeks passed, then months, and then years. Late last year though I was in Kansas City with my friend Carl and we stepped into the huge Mission Road antique mall. As we were getting ready to depart after our exhaustive tour of the mall, my eyes bugged out. For, there on a wall, hung a single sconce by Oscar Bach.

Golly.

But did it exactly match my single sconce? Often, manufacturers made subtle differences in their products. The last thing I needed was two single non-matched sconces by Oscar.

So, I snapped a picture, and later that day hauled my sconce out and compared it to the image on the computer.

Bingo.

Then weeks and then months passed before I could find the time to schedule a day trip back to Kansas City. Would the other sconce still be there? I was breathless with anticipation.

Arriving at the mall, I hurried to where I remembered seeing the sconce: upstairs, just ahead, and in a small room. Thus, I headed that way.

Only to be dashed.

Not only could I not find the sconce, there were no small rooms at the top of the stairs. Was my memory faulty?

Sigh. So began a search through the entire vast antique mall. Sigh. I wandered from terrifyingly long aisle to another terrifyingly long aisle, from room to room, and from floor to floor. Then I backtracked. And began just wandering aimlessly, ever more adjusting to the idea that my single Oscar would forever remain single…

…and then, wait, what was that? My eyes focused. My pace quickened. And my heart sang!

For there, hanging on a wall in a small room on the first-floor rear…was my Holy Grail.
