A Surprising Niche
The Cross House continues to amaze and startle me.
In the spacious foyer and stair hall is a niche:
To the right of the niche is a door to a vestibule (the north entrance). There are three stained-glass arched windows. To the left is a door to the telephone closet. Yes, a telephone closet. Pretty cool.

Above the windows, I was amazed to discover today, is this incredible trim! I have never seen it previously as the light from the windows is so bright, that everything else in the niche goes dark. At night, with the windows dark, the whole niche goes dark. I had to really manipulate the image to even show the trim. Well, I really LOVE this new discovery!
The restoration of the niche has always been a low priority.
No longer!

LOVE THIS!
It still amazes me that in all the years the house was used as a motel or an apartment building, no one ever removed the trim or the beautiful windows. Both are just stunning.
I know!!!!!
Gorgeous and very thoughtful design. Is there a window in the telephone closet? I imagine a desk built in with room for a chair and not much else.
The telephone closet has a round stained-glass window.
The transom not only provides ventilation, but I imagine that it also served as a useful eavesdropping device.
Way to go Ross! The niche is stunning and the stained glass is beautiful! Congrats on this new trim discovery and wishes for more continued discoveries!!
