An Update

I have not posted in a bit although work continues on the Cross House almost daily.

The last week has been focused on repairing roof tiles, and reworking the built-in gutter in the SE corner. All this should be done this weekend. I hope. The work is not very photogenic.

This interlude is not part of the 2017 Heritage grant but it seems foolish, with the scaffolding right there, to not spend a week on this vital work. When completed, I will eagerly await the next big rainstorm. Will all the water STAY in the gutter, rather than spill over it as it has done for decades?

Only water will tell.

Next week? Repointing the north chimney commences!!!!!!!!

Hope and pray the gutter does not overflow. I agree you might as well do the gutter and chimney while the scaffolding if still up there. I would like to see pictures of the built in gutter repaired. We are having the same problem with our gutter and not sure how to build it higher without looking completely ridiculous. Our built in gutter is on the front porch, so it will be seen easily from the ground. Good luck with the chimney.

Having this problematic water issue addressed should be beyond satisfying considering all of the havoc wreaked by it over the years. Go, Ross, GO!

I don’t envy you the box gutter repair.

My box gutter had a seeping leak that ejected out of the fascia and I could not for the life of me find the source.

I painted the entire inside of the box gutter with rubberized coating and it still leaked like a sieve.

Ripping off the roof on the back porch and rebuilding it was becoming my last resort.

And you are up so high!

We had the very same issue on our 1886 house; nothing worked. A few years after we bought the house, we were given a photo of our house taken in 1903, which revealed that it originally had no gutters and that there were small gables over the front and side steps of our wrap around porch. We were preparing to restore the porch anyhow, so this revelation could not have happened at a better time, LOL… Now, the new replica gables shed the water away from the steps, and no more leaky gutters with small maple trees sprouting everywhere! 🙂 I was worried that the water running off of the porch would cause drainage issues, but our yard slopes just right so that there is no issue there.

Good luck with that chimney!! And let’s hope the gutter works as it should. Dump buckets of water down the spout and see how it handles it. Just a thought.

The most important work is not photogenic, but that will keep the house standing for another century!

Ross! I have finally caught up after spending the last several months reading the blog from the beginning. What a journey it has been so far as a reader! So many changes in such a short time… Seeing some earlier posters seemingly disappear after while… and, of course, the shock of Mary’s passing. Now, I am caught up and not sure how I will be able to deal with not having months of posts to read about you and the Cross House every day! (LOL Just kidding!)

I have loved watching your journey with the Cross House and can’t wait to read and see what happens next! (I’m also eager to read “Year In Review: The Ross – 2020” because I’m hopeful that our political nightmare will finally be over come November and I’m sure there will plenty of “Ross happy” to read about in that event!

Also, I will try to comment going forward, but hadn’t done so up until now because, for example, giving an opinion in 2020 on something you’d done and posted about back in 2015 seemed a bit pointless.

Anyhow, I’m here, I’m reading, and I send much love and appreciation to you from Long Beach, CA!
