Baby Stepping

The shaft for the lost dumbwaiter is being rebuilt!!!!!!!! The 1950 pink bathroom tiles will be entombed behind the new shaft. And somebody, many years from now, may rediscover them. “Why would anybody cover these fabulous tiles?”

Looking up to the the first floor. The infilled flooring will be removed. The 1×6 boards are part of the original shaft. These style boards are still available and will be used to recreate the shaft. And adjacent laundry chute.

In the former Aladdin’s Cave, a steel beam has been installed to support the weight of the library island above (filled with books). In time, the joists would have eventually sagged.

See the radiator hanging from the ceiling? Just left of center?

It is gone! It was cracked and not repairable.

Another window to the carriage house basement has been reglazed and refinished.

Daily, baby stepping, I clean up a few pieces of glass. I have five done now.

The sash to the right is the north kitchen window to the carriage house. Its mate is also restored. The left sash is to the secret bedroom of the carriage house. Its mate, too, is also restored.

    This is such wonderful news!!

You are making baby steps and extraordinary results— in increments….

Everything you have described in this post is so very important—albeit baby steps!

    Awesome!

I suppose it makes some sort of sense but I have never heard of or seen a radiator hanging from a ceiling.

Your baby steps seem to be a lot bigger than mine. Baby leaps and bounds to my baby steps. I’m trying to just do two a day or at least every other day.

I did finally mat and frame a piece of vintage wallpaper I bought that is the same period as the house. As a matter of fact, I think I bought it from someone mentioned on your blog. I love it. But I hate the frame I bought. Thought it was wood and it was resin and is horribly heavy. I’m afraid to hang it. So I will have to get another frame for it. But at least I can look at it now leaning against the wall and dream of it finally hanging up. So it was a baby step and then a bit of a shuffle back.

Seeing your windows I am remembering that my kitchen French door could probably use another coat of paint. Just as well as I bought some curtains some time ago and I still haven’t put them on. Like for a year. If I get it done, can I count that as two steps?

The ohly thing that I could possibly love more than a restored dumbwaiter and that not-scary Victorian House Basement (break those stereotypes!) is those lovely restored window sashes. Thanks ross, I live for these baby-step updates.

Slowly but surely…loving the dumb waiter.
