A while back, I arrived at the Cross House to discover a small box sitting on the porch. What, I wondered, was inside?
As I don’t use the house as my mail address, finding any delivery is, in itself, unusual. But, I do enjoy a surprise.
Bringing the box in, I opened it to discover bits of old lighting! And it seemed that some of these bits, once put together, would create a matched pair of gas/electric sconces.
The sconces were, well, unprepossessing. But, no matter, for I knew some wizardry could transform them. Wanna see? Scroll way down…
Squee!!!!!!!! The upper tip is the gas jet.
The plainness of the sconces (with no shade for the gas jet) particularly appealed to me as they were likely intended for service areas. As such, I chose very plain glass shades for the electric sockets. They might have originally just had bare bulbs.
In the Cross House I may install the pair in the servant’s stair, or perhaps in the kitchen where I need a matched pair.
The box of bits has been sitting on my desk for many months now and I was determined to not depart 2020 with getting these sconces restored, and then doing this post, as a proper way of thanking Clay.

Those look like they would have been perfect in my servants’ stairs and living quarters.
I was surprised that a gas-electric fixture would have been installed in those areas.
