CH: Day 102

Circa-1921, the turret had door on its north side, second-floor, installed to access the roof of a new porch roof. I removed the decaying porch in 2014, and mostly covered over the door with a piece of OSB board to satisfy the insurance company. But with the first-floor looking better by the day the OSB looked worse by the day.

It had to go. This is Justin looking down to make sure there were no baby birds or baby squirrels nesting inside.

Also, on the main west front the original 1894 water table, just under the siding, was removed circa-1921 when the new porch was installed. I knew that lengths were stored away so I hauled all these bits out. And…gadzooks!…there is enough to restore this lost feature along the main west front.

And more gadzooks! Vinyl siding mostly done! OSB board gone! Bit of water table trim installed! Vertical trim to right of entry being installed! Gadzooks, indeed!

It’s looking better, bit by bit by bit. Hooray!
P.S. This isn’t a typo, but I don’t think you need both instances of “inside” in this sentence: “It had to go. This is Justin looking down inside to make sure there were no baby birds or baby squirrels nesting inside.” I think you can safely remove the first one 🙂
U r a peach! Thanks, Barb!
Is the plan with that doorway opening to replace it with another window similar to the three sashes already present?
I think if the roofline is extended that it will cut through the opening so that opening will have to be raised so putting in a similar window makes sense. If any of those roof windows are removed, they can be reused in the turret. Ross said they weren’t original but added and that may be where one of them came from.
Great progress on the vinyl and how lucky for you you have the original water table boards. Things are really moving along.
Hooray for squirreled-away lumber! Here to serve the house again.
