CH: Day 38

Drum roll, please.

Yesterday I posited two questions.

Was there a circa-1920 header above the entry of the Carriage House, under the turret?

Or was the turret supported by a full-width 1894 header?

Today…I have an answer from the past.

I cut through the sheathing just under the south end of the turret. Under…

…was this great discovery. See the square wood block, center? That is the bottom corner of a 2-inches thick, full-width 1894 header.

You can see how the header is just under the south end. I do not know how tall it is but assume 12-inches, at least.

The header is seen upper corner, far right. I can reach my hand between the studs to confirm it is full width. There is NO header just above the entry. So, the 1894 header is supporting the turret. Which makes sense as there is a bit of evidence that a barn door was originally under the turret.

This will make removing the entry and replacing it with the big window, centered under the turret, vastly easier.

Ross happy.

That’s wonderful Ross. The stars are aligning.

Awesome! I also love the idea of the barn door being under that turret, must’ve looked so cool.

This is so exciting! I’d love to see the door move now, if you can make that happen. It seems like a lot of work to tidy up the front facade now only to tear it apart later to move the door.

Just curious: Given that a barn door was likely under the turret originally, what kind of door would you like to put on the front of the house if you could choose whatever you wanted?

I suspected it would be there. Unless it was rotten or damaged beyond structural soundness, why replace a header? You just use it.

Wouldn’t be surprised if it went right up to the turret above.

So Mazeltov! I’m sure this is going to adjust some of your itemized timetable and rearrange a few things.

That is so cool. What a relief for you that must’ve been to find!

Yea! Figured it would be there since the turret had to be supported somehow or even the current door wouldn’t open after awhile. Excited to see the door moved to it’s new location
