Cody Scores Again!

Cody left today after a 10-day visit. We got a lot done, as Cody furiously worked on numerous lights so they could be listed for sale.

Last week, we went to an antique store in nearby Cottonwood Falls, which I have not been to since Covid. Quickly, we amassed a large pile of lighting to buy. The storekeeper walked over and said: “Make sure you check out the backyard.” Then she pointed to a door.

We opened the door, and a blast of steaming air assaulted us. Geez! It was HOT!

Meandering the yard, I soon said: “I’m melting, and gonna go back inside.”

A few yards later I heard Cody shriek. Then shriek again. I stopped.

My first thought?

He had injured himself somehow.

My second thought?

Nope. He…had…found…something.

Something…fabulous.

Turning, I scurried towards him while skin melted off my body.

Another shriek.

Cody was bent down, looking at something. He turned to me, a titanic-sized smile across his face. I looked down.

Holy…

…Moly! SQUEE!!!!!!!! A marble sink which is perfect for the Cross House, just sitting in the grass, a few miles from my house, and…drum roll, please…just $125! So, yea, SQUEE!!!!!!!! Oh, and note the original faucet.

Incredibly, the backsplash was also just sitting in the parched grass. It is just too delicious. I love the beveled edge.

The sink also retains its original thingy to hold a beaded chain for a stopper.

I looked online for a matching faucet (surely, one is out there), but my quick search revealed nada. However, new, similar, period-style faucets are available. I wish they came in nickel.

While writing this, Cody texted that he is home safe and, importantly, that one of his cats (he has two) approves of an old light he purchased.

I think the sink will go in the third-floor bathroom of the Cross House. It needs another faucet, a basin, and a pair of support brackets.

The hunt begins!

How scrumptious! Best price too! With a unique faucet. Never thought there was a built-in stopper holder ever. Bravo to you both. Hello to the blog’s new kitty.

I remember seeing stopper holders in situ when I was a kid; very practical. This sink is a dream, just gorgeous. Cody has an eye for beauty.

I’ll bet if you keep looking you could find those reproduction faucets in chrome or nickel. If not, just remove the plug chain holder from the original, have it cleaned up and brass plated to match. I’m sure a base will turn up as well.

What a great find. It will look wonderful in the Cross house. I’m watching a show from the UK now where people are finding stuff like this in their attics and basements as they are fixing up old houses. I just love when stuff like that is found for free and repurposed. But next is to find it locally at a really great price. Those are great faucets as you can use an elbow to turn them on without getting them yucky with dirty hands. And they’re labeled. The first thing I did when I moved into my old house was to replace the modern fixtures with more period ones with the porcelain hot and cold labels.

But ROSS – you left out the best part about that haul!

    (I’ll fill you all in)

After we STUFFED my SUV full of lights, but before we headed back to the house, I quite innocently asked Ross if there were any other antiques stores in town to plunder since we were already out, not really expecting him to say yes, because the town is quite small.

Low and behold, there was one more, directly across the street from the first, so I made a (very illegal) U-Turn in the middle of the road and parked, to wide grins and much laughter from the elderly owners of the first shop we had just left.

Within 5 minutes we had seen most of the small store, but I couldn’t possibly have left without convincing Ross that he absolutely HAD to buy the biggest antique oval mirror that I’ve ever seen.

What can I say? I’m a bad influence.

BUT – it’s going to look FABULOUS in the 1894 powder room against the wild peacock wallpaper, as Ross so eagerly assured the cashier, as I’m assuring you all now.

We paid for our treasures and walked out of the shop having entirely forgotten that the SUV was already packed…putting a damper on the high of a good find.

We are, however, creative men, as you all know…

And with the push of a button, I opened the sunroof, and voila! The mirror fit…sorta. In Ross’s lap. With the last foot or so sticking out the opening in the roof…

I don’t think either of us could have laughed harder.

But it DID make it home in one piece!

Cody! You are so fun & amazing!!

You write as dramatically and as well as Ross! Haha

Hysterical! Reminds me of a time in Colorado when mom visited and her, 1 sis, and I went to a small town in the mountains and I bought a pie safe(reproduction). Had a small Chevy Citation, so put down back seats, sis drove with mom in front, I sat sideways with legs straight out, cramped in back with the pie safe! Uncomfortable ride of at least 45 minutes! But you do what you have to do! Keep up the great work!

    • Ross on August 10, 2021 at 8:59 pm

Ross required zero convincing about how fabulous the oval mirror was.

Ross only needed to figure out if there was a place for it. After walking around the store, pondering this grave question, an ideal location was arrived at: Yegads! The powder room!

Ross – not sure these would be of interest or not but thought I’d pass them along.

OMG Ross I shriek too when I saw your sink! I am constantly stopping at antique places searching for period fixtures for my 1890 house. What a beauty!
