Damn. Averted.

Yesterday, I did a post about discovering a shingled area caked with 123-year-old paint. Ugh. I was SO not looking forward to scraping/sanding this.

In a flash of brilliance however (wholly uncommon generally and particularly so for a Monday) I thought: Why not take advantage of the heat? So I glopped super-duper paint stripper all over the terrifying shingles. Heat really activates paint stripper. Well, a few hours later…

…I was able to pretty effortlessly scrape off the paint. Tomorrow, I will do a light sanding, and then the shingles will be ready for paint. So…damn averted!

You may have to wipe the area with turpentine to remove the wax that is in the stripper. Auf Glueck!

That’s making the heat work FOR you! Good thinking, Ross.

Thanks for this post. I have to attack garage windows with built up paint- I’ll use the Ross method of attack!
    Looks great!

Nice going Ross. I have never attempted a project so grand, but have stripped miles of woodwork and antique furniture with the goopy chemical stripper ( I swear by Zip Strip), but anyway, I find it preserves the texture of the wood much better than simply sanding. I say that with humor because I absolutely HATE sanding. Anyway, I’m so happy you found a solution that worked for you and am anxiously awaiting the opportunity to run to Emporia this fall to see your masterpiece in person!
