Drum Roll Please: THE CAT FENCE RESUMES!

In 2019 (I think) I began work on the cat fence. Then I had to stop to ready the Carriage House for Cody. Today, with the help of Godsend Eric, the project resumed.

Eric.

I purchased the materials in 2019. Thank goodness. The metal has been stored outside and developed a weird white coating:

“White rust is a white, chalky substance that can form on the surface of zinc materials, like galvanized steel. White rust can form when zinc is exposed to hydrogen and oxygen. This combination creates a zinc hydroxide, as opposed to the iron oxide which is common form of rust. Using a weak acid such as white vinegar and a non-metal bristle brush is recommended to remove the staining, followed by a thorough rinsing with potable water.”

The things one learns on this blog thingy!

I am doing this now because the frame for the fence has been highly visible since 2019. With the Carriage House now looking vastly better it seemed prudent to finish off the other glaring “why isn’t that done yet?” project.

An issue is the pond I will be installing in the SW corner. Before completing the fence I need to get a backhoe kinda thing into the yard to dig a big round hole so the liner can be installed.

NOTE: The fence is metal because I need a material the cats cannot climb. So, wood is out of the question.

NOTE: I have done several posts about my plans for the next few years. I will NOT be moving into the Cross House until likely 2026 but I want the cat fence finished for reasons outlined above.

Could you use a vinegar solution and a power washer?

Ross, has the ground under that corner been probed with a rod to see if there’s something underground? It looks like the ladder is resting on a manhole cover. I’d hate to see you accidentally crack into a pipe or even open a hole into an old cistern or cesspit. A low profile, modern fountain set on a bed of stone dust might be a better choice than digging a pond. If it’s something like this, well, we all know most kitties don’t like getting their paws wet…

    Beautiful work by the way!
