Finding NARNIA!

The NW corner of the North Bedroom, Carriage House.

The small door leads into a low closet. Note the bookshelf, left.

Today, Scott told me that if you get on all fours, go into the closet, and make left turn, there is this finished space behind the bookshelf. I had no idea the space existed. When the structure was converted into a house circa-1921, some poor carpenter had to crawl into this narrow confine and do all this work. As a kid, I would have cherish this hidey-hole.

Isn’t that cool! I wonder why it was there, just a secret closet? Gleaning every inch of storage?

Magic! Thank you for bringing a bit of JOY into my otherwise bleak emails….

Is this not part of the original finished structure of the carriage house?

I think the 1894 interior of the Carriage House was unfinished (save the turret room) and was used, possibly, as a hay loft. Most of the dormers are part of the later conversion.

Is it possible that corner was finished before the bookcase and other work was installed in front of it?

I wondered about that, too. Maybe someone decided they wanted shelves there long after the conversion?

I also had this thought, but although we can’t tell for sure from the photo, it looks to me like the back wall of the bookcase may have the same dark paneling as the rest of the hidden nook, which would mean it was all finished at the same time (after the bookcase installed).

      That’s what I thought.
