Trump, and Fox News, both do something a lot.

They endlessly rail about how dangerous the “radical left” is. And I talk with Fox viewers and they are, indeed, terrified of the “radical left”.

But, as with much of what Trump and Fox say, they are projecting:

This new study proves that the violence is massively coming from the…right. Note how Trump and Fox never mention these killings.

Trump and Fox are also railing about the “dangerous” people currently protesting, across the nation, police violence against Black citizens.

What they do not mention is that there are two groups out there:

  1. Protesters.
  2. Rioters.

These are two distinct groups.

The former advocates, peacefully, for change. And Trump has been sending out goons to teargas, harm, and kidnap these lawfully abiding citizens.

The latter intends harm. They cause fights and damage property. They actually travel to locations where they think they can ratchet up unrest. And, videos proves that the police sometimes smash windows and set buildings on fire so they can blame this on the protesters. This is not a new trick, sadly.

The former hugely outweighs the latter in terms of size. But the latter gets more media attention.

I fully approve of the protesters. I reject the rioters.

I was thirteen when this horror happened, a day when the American government murdered its own people. This iconic image shattered me. To this day it still causes me great pain. But, during all the ensuing years and decades, I took comfort in the thought that this would never happen again. But…it is happening again.

Kent State (5/4/1970); posted a remembrance of that day on Facebook. Sitting in Toledo, Ohio HS (senior AP History class; month before HS graduation); when the reports were televised on TV. Our teacher was liberal and brought in the TV into class… horrible senseless murders (National guardsmen opened fire; killed 4 unarmed student protestors).

We are living in such chaotic times further fueled by current administration.

    Thank you for this post.

I was on my senior class trip to DC . I remember getting on the bus and seeing a newspaper with large headlines about Kent State. I got off the bus to get a paper. I couldn’t believe what l was reading. I never would have believed that could happen in our country, and I never thought I’d see something like that again. Till now.

Bonnie, what happened at Kent State is SEARED into my being.

And watching history now repeat itself is terrifying to me.

    Hello Ross,

A few weeks ago, My wife Beth, and I was in Kent Ohio, (Her alma mater) and we were at a nice wine and cheese shop next to campus enjoying an outdoor lunch when sirens and masses of people started moving towards campus. There was a big Black Lives Matter march going on and it continued without incident.

It was eerie and also reassuring that these protestors could do what they were doing today without the threat of violence or being shot by government “troops”.

How quickly things have changed in a few weeks. 🙁

Blair, I’m kinda chilled by your comment. Wow, to be…there. Wow. I’m sure I’d break out crying.

I live just out side Portland OR . I drove thru downtown what I saw made sad , angry and scared . I thought about the owners of the small businesses and the loss of there incomes due to a pandemic . Then the riots and the the destruction of there property . Now we have government troops who have made the situation even worse. AS someone who remembers downtown in the 70’s when it was a rundown mess and then the beautiful place it became. To be destroyed by a legitimate movement being hijacked by troops and rioters. It’s beyond me. May Portland one day again be the beautiful forward looking place that it is . I have the news on as have been typing, it seems Trump is sending us more troops that’s DISGUSTING ! We don’t them here , please go home !

Thank you, Kelly. I love getting a firsthand report.

I am hopeful that the current painful process this country is experiencing is the equivalent of a surgical procedure to remove a tumor; increased pain, followed by a healing process, and finally relief, albeit with permanent scars. I am encouraged by the growing number of Americans who are willing to stand up and reject the president and his hate rhetoric, and even more optimistic at polls that show his support dropping, even among Republicans. Don’t get me wrong; November is going to be a close battle. Bigots, racists, and ignorant, scared people of all ages who haven’t votes in years will come out to vote for him because they believe that their “way of life” is threatened. Some of the things that people post on social media absolutely blow my mind; it makes me sad that people I know and care about actually believe some of the idiocy that they share. But I think that we “left-wingers” have been spurred to action in a way not seen since the days of Kent State, and I believe that a large number of fence-sitters have been swayed in our direction. The Republicans may soon echo the Japanese commander who attacked Pearl Harbor when he stated that their actions may have only woken a sleeping giant. Ross, I know that you have been attacked here many times publicly for stating your views, and for each of those I am guessing there were ten others who attacked you privately. Many in your shoes would have backed down and simply stuck to posting about paint colors and shingles; I admire and applaud your strength of conviction and willingness to take a (very) public stand for what is right.
