Inchin’ Along.

The new Master Suite at the carriage house will consist of:

  • Foyer.
  • Spa-style bathroom in the turret room and with two closets.
  • Large walk-in, windowed closet.
  • Linen closet.
  • Bedroom.

This is the large walk-in, windowed closet. It used to be the 1921 Conversion bathroom. But it was sitting on 20-foot-long 2×12 joists, and sagging a scary 5-inches. The joists…not big enough to begin with…had been cut and notched and holed over the decades to become basically 2x2s. Yep.terrifying. The joists have now been sistered with new lumber, and jacked back up. As clothes do not weigh as much as a cast-iron bathtub, I figured the space would be MUCH better as a closet. Anyway, after being stuffed with bits for years, I cleared it all out. In the right, rear corner is the HVAC unit which I had brought down from the attic several years ago. I dislike equipment that cannot be easily serviced. I now need to encase it in easily removed panels. In the foreground is the 1921 wall dividing the bathroom from the linen closet. This was brutally punched through a long while back. I believe the window, which is part of a dormer, dates from 1921.

While hard to tell, the opening has been cleaned up, and a 24-wide 1921 door frame inserted. In the foreground is the opening from the foyer into the linen closet. This 30-wide opening is from 1921. The vent stack will be enclosed.

The new closet will…of course, dahlink…have a surface-mounted crystal chandelier in the center and will be quite glamorous. I think closets should be fun and unexpected.

A large walk in closet WITH a window? Plus that luxury spa turret bathroom.

Oh, I would so move into the Carriage House.

I have a very small surface mounted chandelier I was going to put in the bathroom in my garage but the box in the ceiling doesn’t match the light fixture and I just haven’t been able to figure out what to do about it. I thought it would be a kick to have a crystal chandelier in the garage bathroom, plus I have no place else to put it. Just hasn’t been high on the priority list.

I’m still baby crawling™ through my fence repair. I changed paint colors for one delay. Picked up a gallon of Driftwood Gray and I’m hoping tomorrow, being MLK’s birthday and no USPS mail delivery, I could lock the dogs in the front yard after their breakfast and take down the old fence section and put the new one up and have the yard secure by the time it is time for their dinner. This section and the gate have been the most time consuming project. I started it before Thanksgiving but it’s been one delay after another. And I know have three different colors of stain/sealer. But I will use them all. I’m hoping once I get this done the other sections will go much faster.

“Closets should be fun and unexpected,” is my new favorite interior design sentence.

He mentioned it above: “This is the large walk-in, windowed closet. It used to be the 1921 Conversion bathroom.”

These buildings have been so many things over the years, you need a flow chart to follow it all! Especially the Cross House, which has been a family home, a motel, a frat house, a rooming house, and an ongoing restoration project over its lifespan.
