Inching Along

The new shingling is done on the wall to the right. Squee!!!!!!!! Now, the area above the west Sewing Room window needs new shingles. First though, I wanted to remove the wood drip cap above the window trim so I could have a computer-crimped cover made for it.

So, I made a new drip cap out of pressure-treated lumber, and used my electric planer to create the all-important angled top (to shed water). But why, I wondered, had the original cap, and ONLY this cap, rotted out? For, if I did not find (and fix) the cause, the damage would occur again. I pondered, and pondered…

…but the cause was suddenly glaringly obvious. See the downspout? I put that in place, as there had been no downspout for decades. Thus, water from the gutter just splattered out of the pipe through the curved cornice. And goodby wood drip cap.

I am sitting here, at my computer, listening to an old BeeGee’s interview with Larry King, while eating a Carls Jr. big burger, and I got notice of a new “Ross” post. (I have almost become an anxious stalker waiting for the next post) I just have to say, thank you for adding pleasure to our lives out here in Covid land and isolationism. Your posts are quite literally the highlight of my day. I anxiously read every word with glee and enjoyment. 🙂
Well, having said all that, I bet you cant wait to be done with shingles. Congrats on getting all those complex angles done. That is no easy feat and you appear to be a master at it. Huge hugs and smiles 🙂
Damn you, David!

I want a Carls Jr. BIG burger too!!
How do you keep the sweat out of your eyes? I was very blonde with fair, fair skin. Out in the Southern heat all my hair looked like I had been swimming and my eyes would flood over with sweat, bright red face. In sports all teachers would say you go sit in the shade. That was it for me, I was put out as my veins showed. When I was able to garden 5 AM was my time. Still stinging, blurry sweat eyes. I hate that.
Ross, every time you are a wonder to me! So can’t wait for this part to be done! Wishing you cool breezes and a cloudy day!
Tura, I always have a powerful fan pointed at me when I work on the house. Makes a world of difference.
When I mow the lawn, I always carry a cotton cloth to wipe away the drips.
Ross, I do the head band and cotton cloth around my neck thing. It must be the powerful fan that keeps your eyes sweat free! I need a fan that fits on the head, hat like and showers down powerful breezes. Hum….picture that…. helicopter fan. Thinking millions……..
part archeology, part detective work. Nice to see progress!
Wow!
Love the “Inching Along” posts!
Painstakingly, righting crazy wrongs and big water drainage problems! Rotting wood from water damage is so awful. I am so thankful for your analytical skills and artisan skills to correct and right the wrongs!
The shingles! The effing shingles! Well inch by inch…..
The south facade has turned into a shingling nightmare!
Each step completed means one step closer to completion!
You are on your way!!
