Inching Along Columnly

The current focus is the restoration of the three original columns on the porte-cochère. The missing column (left) had now been replicated, and the original columns removed and taken into the house to be restored. See the right column? It’s a real mess; the most damaged.

Its top block had rotted so this portion had to cut away (the center was always hollow). It would have been easier to remove the whole top block but I always try to retain original material.

Wow! It’s going to be spectacular to see that all put back together! It does a heart good to see such care put into that house. Thanks for sharing your journey.
Your dedication to “doing it right” is amazing…I look back on a few things that, in hindsight, I should have salvaged and repaired and didn’t. I wish that you had bought the Cross House 20 years ago, LOL
Wouldn’t you save a lot of time and money (that could go to the house!) by finally moving in? I keep hoping to see a post announcing that exciting event!
Ross has stated before, the only reason why is the back yard must be completed with a special fence, Ross needs his cats, and they need their protected outdoor time. The yard also won’t be cheap.
Yes I’m fully aware of all the issues. But I encourage him to pull the trigger sooner rather than later. Sometimes you just gotta jump.
I do agree with you though, I feel it would take some stress and money off, if I remember right Ross does travel a little ways to get between houses, it would save time, effort and money. The community did help out with some of the planning and supplies for the backyard…
Hi Bethany and Jonathan!
I will soon be doing a Move In Update post!
I am always amazed at the scale of these house pieces when seen close up! It doesn’t look quite so daunting when you see the pic of the whole porte-cochere, but when you see piece in close scale – wow!
The house is looking so crispy!
I will be back in Emporia for a few days in October. Let me know if you can use a day’s free labor. I am good at cleaning, and I take direction reasonably well. Would be happy to contribute a day to getting you closer to moving in.
