Inching Along…Windily

I have been itching to get some paint on the trim to the double windows.

So…SQUEE!!!!!!!! And, the shingling to the right of the double windows is DONE & PAINTED!

Today was almost 60-degrees. In January.

While seemingly ideal, it was also terrifyingly windy. The plan for today was to paint and shingle the part above the one window. But wood shingles and wind do not mix. No matter how careful one is being, the wind will win and many shingles will fly off to parts unknown.

So, just paint today. Yet, even this was fraught with difficulty. The top of the paint can, left on the scaffolding boards, flew off. My sunglasses, removed for a moment and left on the scaffolding, vanished. It took me almost 30 minutes to find them on the ground.

The wind was so strong that I was afraid a gust would send me, too, crashing to the ground. So, I tightly gripped a railing the whole time.

Summation?

  1. Not a fun day.
  2. I loathe wind.

Not a good omen on the first day of a new decade.

On the bright side, there is, at last, at last, some green paint on the double window trim!

I’m all caught up to real time after marathon reading this blog for half my vacation. Ross, you’re so inspiring to me!! What you are doing is restoring beauty to something deserving. I love the community that has built up of devoted super fans! I also enjoyed commenting on very old posts from the edge of my seat. It’s been a joy to watch you make dull alligatored wood brighter with the original faux finish! I loved all the mysteries! All the inch by inch progress. Plus, I love your upbeat humor sprinkled throughout your descriptions. I have a question though, what’s on your top 10 most wanted list? It’s obvious from your posts that you know your way around both eBay and your favorite antique stores. It’s also obvious that more eyes on your hunt certainly couldn’t hurt. My home is MCM but I haunt my local Craigslist searching for bargains often. It pains me to admit that I saw like 10 of those dreamy marble shapely legged sinks you lust after. They were being sold by an old landmark hotel being modernized in SF just a couple years ago! I stared at those listings. I had no good reason to buy them even though they were $90 each. Carrera. I KNOW! If I had only known about you! I feel like I failed you in my ignorance. But no more! I can be a west coast scout if you will allow it. We all can. Please, what missing bits are you most on the hunt for?

It’s been fun reading your comments, Susan! So very nice to meet you!

I yearn for a period-correct tub, a period-correct marble vanity for the first-floor bath, period-correct faucets for the butler’s pantry, and one period-correct high-tank toilet in restored condition.

I also yearn for world peace.

      And a time-travel machine.

      And my youth back.

I’ll be in Emporia next week! I can’t wait to drive by the house to see all the progress. Every time I see the house, it looks better and better all the time. It’s inspiring!
