In 2012, four Americans died during the attack in Banghazi.

At the time, Hillary Clinton was the Secretary of state.

And what did the Republicans in Congress do?

They went on to have TEN hearings, they spent millions of dollars on these hearings, and then grilled Hillary for eleven hours (even though she was a private citizen at the time).

But…but…they never introduced any evidence showing that Hillary was responsible for these tragic deaths. Indeed, to people paying attention, the deaths were the result of Republicans in Congress refusing to authorize additional security at numerous diplomatic compounds…including Benghazi.

So, Hillary did nothing wrong, yet Republicans crucified her. Gleefully.

In 2020, Republican senators refused to convict Trump, after he was impeached by the House for extorting and bribing Ukraine to help him win the 2020 election.

Each is a serious crime.

Republicans went meh.

In 2021, Republican senators refused to convict Trump, after he was impeached a second time by the House for inciting a terrorist attack on the US Capitol which resulted in the deaths of five people, and with many injured.

This was a day which shocked the world.

And, yet again, Republicans went meh.

It is now 100% clear: The Republican party is a threat to democracy and to America. The party only cares about the rules of law, decency, and the Constitution when applied to Democrats. When it comes to Republicans, they feel free to shit on the rules of law, decency, and the Constitution.

I am a Democrat. But if a Democratic member member of Congress, or in the Executive branch, breaks the law? They should be held accountable.

Republicans though have now proved, without any doubt, that they consider themselves above the rules of law, decency, and the Constitution.

Yesterday was a sad day for America.

It’s an incredibly horrible situation. To see that your Rep senators care more about re election than justice or truth. They care about themselves more than they care about American democracy. My only hope is that some of the state trials against come good. I also think that whilst the majority of Rep voters won’t have been convinced of his guilt some will. And more importantly some of the people who think voting doesn’t matter will have seen that it does. It may be that the Republican party splinters in the end with a chasm between the more moderate ones and the extreme right wing ones. I think in the long run aquitting Trump may have consequences. I hope so anyway. Take care of yourself Ross.

Bereft is the only possible word. Such sadness that when the GOP had the opportunity to show courage and integrity, to do the right thing, they chose not to. This impeachment was no witch hunt, Trump should know because he has waged many of his own witch hunts, and this came no where near being what he has done to others. Their crime being that of standing in his way. This was a democracy choosing to defend its principles and law, only to have elected party officials vote to ignore these same principles and constitution. My father left the USA back in the 1960s, and I feel so blessed that his temporary working holiday abroad became permanent. Winston Churchill once said that democracy is not perfect, but it is better than anything else. Can I suggest that there are democracies which work a whole lot better than that we are witnessing here. Should you choose to leave the Cross House, I’m sure we have heritage properties that need your care and attention in Australia.

I have spent the time since the vote wondering if 2-13-2021 is the date that will be remembered as the end of democracy in the US. I have been angry at what has been happening with the GOP for years, but now I am just sad for our country.

I’m so f*cking angry. What does that pickle head have to do to be brought down?

Old quote during one of his rallies, “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn’t lose any voters, OK?” Coming up on 500,000 deaths. 500,000 fucking deaths because of his incompetence and people still support him and the Republicans that defend that asshole. Then he sends his brainwashed followers to take down his enemies at the Capitol which included the Vice President. Of all the people that the Republicans stand behind, Trump? Really? Sigh…

Justice was not only perverted… it was strangled, stabbed, and kicked as it lay bleeding on the floor of the Senate. The evidence of the crime was there in front of everyone, and still the Republicans said it was fine, just dandy… no biggie. Had a Democrat ever done anything remotely similar (though the Benghazi analogy is already a great one), there would be criminal proceedings, not just an impeachment trial. I have a very bad feeling about leaving my kids to live their lives in this country after we’re gone (we’re older parents). It’s doubtful democracy is going to last… and we know what happens when fascist regimes take over… they always find a group to scapegoat for whatever goes wrong in a country. We’ve been on that track already for 4 years, and it’ll only get worse. What happened yesterday makes it that much more likely another authoritarian/fascist will rise again to political power. My kids are Asian Americans (and hate crimes toward Asians have risen alarmingly), and I am losing hope that they’ll be safe in this country.

They let him go on a “ technically “ by saying he was now a private citizen and the constitution doesn’t cover impeaching a private citizen. I call bullsh*t! McConnell should have been forced to bring the senate back or to be charged with accomplice to treason. If the articles were delivered when they were ready, we wouldn’t be in this disgraceful situation! Trump was still in office then!

The only good thing I think about is how many decent republicans are currently leaving the GOP. Maybe that be the wake up call those honor less senators need.

    • Ross on February 14, 2021 at 5:37 pm

Terri, as you know, Trump was impeached while still in office.

      Twice.

The Senate hearings were simply to decide the punishment.

I remember the tears starting after the trial ended. Pray civilian criminal charges will be in his future. As no banks will deal with him and he owes so much, big donors have backed away, social media has blocked him, dare we hope something will happen against him to take away his power? Can’t believe how spineless the repubs were – such selfishness and fear of losing their cushy lifestyle and the thought of actually having to get a real job. It’s been proven he can hardly read – saw youtube videos that made me embarrassed that no one noticed until now! He also goes on and on about immigration and he wanted it to be impossible that the immigrant’s family could get citizenship – but that’s how he got a wife and she got her family in. What an egotistic idiot – that’s what makes him so dangerous. God please help us.

    • Ross on February 14, 2021 at 5:38 pm

Laurie, two of Trump’s wives have been immigrants.

Even more amazing. Breaks my heart: I saw 2 stories on CNN about 2 different girls that their parents were following qnon and it tore their families apart. People have too much time on their hands and leave their brains somewhere…..
