Making Things Shiny Again

Exactly ten years ago, the pair of outer entry doors to the Cross House came back from Dr. Doug looking great.

I think when people restore a house, a priority job should be to make sure the entry looks as good as possible. I think it is a feng shui kinda thing.

However, as time has aged me it also aged the doors. The western sun beats the doors and the finish began to fail a number of years ago. This seemed odd to me as the latex gloss polyurethane I used on the columns in 2017 has held up.

So, in short, I have been suffering the horror of less-than crispy entry doors.

You can imagine my suffering.

I sanded down the flaking finish, but not down to bare wood, and applied latex gloss polyurethane to the middle area. It certainly looks better. I will apply another coat tomorrow, and then decide if I will continue or bite the bullet and go down to bare wood. I also need to refinish the threshold.

10 years is great for a clear finish, but you might consider a marine varnish that has a UV filter in it. There might even be an additive to augment your polyurethane.

You taught me to always make sure the receiving doors looked great. I wish I could post a before and after of the Overholser. But seriously you taught me how to take care of a grand house. Thank you!
