Porch Ceiling. Part IV.
Yesterday, I arrived at the Cross House. My mind was full of thoughts and I was thinking of the pressing things I needed to finish before the day ended
I was not thinking about the porch ceiling.
After getting out of my car, and walking towards the house, I looked up. And stopped in my tracks.
The ceiling stunned me. It looked glorious. Alive. Fabulous!
A friend had written, summing up my response: Coral seems like a crazy choice, but it looks amazing. It gives a warm light under the ceiling, like there’s a tiny sunset in there.
A tiny sunset.
Perfect.
The color is so unexpected that seeing it offers surprise and, I hope, delight. That such a color was popular in the 1890s pleases me all the more. I love reinforcing the era/aesthetic when the Cross House was built.
You can’t see the porch ceiling from the street. It is only revealed by walking towards the house from the sidewalk. And then…oh my!

I chose a high-gloss finish which wonderfully reflects light, making the ceiling quite animated as one walks on the porch.
If somebody had told me a week ago that I would paint the porch ceiling of the Cross House coral I would have thought them quite insane.
But here I am.
Delighted.

Seems to pick up the color of those gorgeous bushes on the sides of the front steps. Also, didn’t I see it somewhere in the stained glass? Hearing of that choice, I wouldn’t have expected to like it, but I definitely agree that it makes the front more vibrant, somehow. Great choice.
It’s all Patricia’s fault!
Perfection.
I am having such a good time! Popcorn, I need popcorn!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great choice for the porch Ross! This house definitely needed something in the red hue to bring the rest of the colors to life. Reds are always a warm and invigorating color and the softness of the coral eases one into everything else.
The railing is coming along nicely as well ;).
The new colors make the house come alive. I can hear her humming I feel pretty oh, so pretty from West Side Story.
Definitely an unexpected surprise. For me it leans just a bit toward “painted lady”. Fun.
Is there something you can do to make the steps looks cleaner? Acid wash or something. Please and thank you. It’s driving me crazy. Shiny columns, coral ceiling…dirty steps…eek 🙂
It’s absolutely stunning! It does remind you of a lovely sunset. <3
The view at different angles with a variety of different stained glass in view is so sumptuous and elegant. It adds an element explored in the paint color samples of the 1890’s but just enough of a color change is so beautiful & adds an additional polish & panache to the total. I think these additional pieces that you have added when others made suggestions or photoshopped examples; are so remarkable!!! Also the beauty of the limestone & unaltered stone steps add to the charm????
Coral is stunning!
And…..it’s PERFECT!
