Prepare To Be GOBSMACKED!

In my last post, I showed how I emptied the island bookshelf in the library in anticipation for bringing in the stunning Henredon table I purchased a few months ago, a Kenny find.

Wanna see?

Scroll way down…

SQUEE!!!!!!!! (Click to enlarge all images.) The former orange island is standing to attention, left.

SQUEE!!!!!!!! Under the table will be new shelving, painted black. Note the new ceiling decor, and frieze decor (matching same in parlor).

The table top is astounding burl. Zounds. I call it Milton Burl. Its finish was cloudy though (right) but Kenny suggested a 0000 steel wool pad saturated in Pledge. A gentle scrub and beast was transformed into beauty (left). And so easy! The stacked books will be under the table.

SQUEE!!!!!!!! All clean!

With the ceiling and frieze now done, it is time to decorate the little amount of visible wall.

Step 1 is this radioactive undercoat. Fear not, for in the end this will only be a border…

…as in the parlor.

Ooh. I love how the burl on the table echoes the portal through time in the ceiling above. That table is so much more elegant than the orange island, and I look forward to seeing the new bookshelves underneath it.

This feels more like a Big Step than a Baby Step(TM).

I love the table in the library. It would be nice to have leg room under the table.

Can’t you put the bookshelf at either end of the table.

    Table is stunning BTW.

Kenny is an absolute peach! All of his finds are sublime!!

I am indeed gobsmacked! Squee indeed!

Bold choice incorporating a rolling scaffold rather than the traditional library ladder to reach the upper shelves, but you be you.

Just kidding, it’s going to be Gaw-gee-US!

I see a relaxing winter project of many happy and relaxing hours perusing books and tweaking shelves ahead! (At least that’s what I’d be doing once the painting and decorating are finished : ) )

Milton Burl is drop-dead gorgeous – and that trick with the Pledge on the steel wool pad is brilliant! Must remember that.

A visit to Cross House is on my bucket list… I swear it would be a religious experience for me!

    Wow, wow, wow, and wow.

What an amazing tabletop! I didn’t know the steel wool and pledge trick either. I’ve got an old cedar chest that I just repaired – the old legs always need restabilizing after every move but I think I devised a more permanent solution this time. The original finish needs some tough love, so I’ll try your solution and see what happens.

      Gentle! Gentle!

      And 0000 steel wool!

        Thank you, thank you!

Check to see if the finish is shellac. If it is, you can revitalize somewhat with just rubbing alcohol. If it helps, you might consider putting a few layers of shellac on it. But not that stuff from a can. Either do you own with flakes or thin the canned stuff down a lot. Then seal with the wax.

Thank you. I’ll give it a whirl. Unfortunately, the finish is good in some areas and bad in others. But will try these two methods. May need more than either.

You are going to love having that table in the library. You don’t realize how really handy a large table like that is in a library until you get one. Then you wonder how you could do without. I love how the room ties into but doesn’t mimmick exactly the parlor. Complimentary but not a copy.

That’s two rooms. How many to go?

Any thoughts on the kitchen? With a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom the only thing stopping you from moving in is the cat fence/cattery.

I trust the process. Excited to see what comes next on top of your radioactive undercoat!

The table looks very dignified in the library. You’ve accomplished so much in the past few weeks.

I just like seeing you happy.

Ross have you ever seen the Kirk House in Garnett? Worth your trip.
