Returning the Past

Today, in the kitchen of carriage house, I tacked into place this cabinet on the north wall.

When I purchased the property in 2014, the cabinet was in a closet, which had previously been an open porch. It was obvious though that the cabinet had originally been elsewhere. But where?

My guess is that it had been a part of the circa-1921 conversion of the carriage house. The kitchen was then wholly redone about 1950. Was the cabinet relocated at this time?

I do not know.

After removing the cabinet in 2015, it has sat in pieces ever since. So, it was a thrill to put it all back together!

And the wall behind the glass doors? I plan to install some vintage wallpaper there. Perhaps…

…this. Because I have a roll of this 1940s paper.

That is a lovely cabinet. Kitchen or dining room. Who knows where it might have come from. Even the living room. It does have that nice display case but it reminds me of the sideboards in dining rooms. If it had screening in stead of glass I would have though it was a pie safe.

I would have held off putting it in place until I had taken down that chimney stack thing and finished it off, just to avoid any possibility of damage.

It would be nice to duplicate something similar on the other side of the refrigerator with doors using that wood in a similar pattern. A full size utility closet or pantry or something.

The chimney is staying as I will be putting the hot water tank exhaust in it.

The cabinet, as I mentioned, is just tacked in place for now so I could see how it looked, and if I had all the parts. I will soon remove it to finish the wall, and hang the paper.

    Ooooooh!

Now I’se gots me a place to puts the fannnnncccyyyyyy china

The wallpaper is much more fabulous than you described to me on the phone! I was, admittedly..worried

Do you think it was meant to be built into/under a soffit? Somehow the top, without a beefier crown, feels…unfinished? to me?

It fits that little niche pretty well. That’s going to be a good landing spot for keys and groceries.

Cody, the cabinet was, it seems, originally fully built in a niche as the sides are unfinished.

I will have to finish off the sides, and add some crown which returns around the sides.

Such a lovely cabinet. I have been inspired by your page ross, and developed a love for old things and hardware. I think your blog helped me understand all the “little things” that make an old house so great. I thought of you when I saw someone throwing out a heavily damaged circa 1910s screen door… and guess who saved the hardware off of it?
Thank you for being an inspiration to so many people, and from Binghamton NY- good luck fixing up the Carriage house!

I love the cabinet. But I really like the image of “ghost Ross” in the reflection on the windows.

Delicious! Would it have been a plinth underneath it at some time?

Love the wallpaper. And love the cabinet. My parents had a cabinet sorta like that but no glass and 3 drawers. It sat in an old shed and when I commented on it, on or the other said “that?” When they moved into a new house in town, guess what showed up in their finished garage (but painted a lovely blue from dark finish)?! Can’t wait to sre all done! (and Cody’s china!) 🙂
