Ross? Ross, who?
Hello everybody!
Remember me, Ross?
I am still very much here.
My blogging though has drastically reduced and this is due, in part, to my lighting business taking up a LOT of my time. You can see here the many fabulous vintage lights I have been listing.
In addition, the work I am doing at the carriage house is less than scintillating. Mostly, I have been working on getting the pantry finished so Cody has a place to store his food and pots and pans and stuff. To this end, the pantry has now been sheetrocked, a portion of the missing plaster ceiling repaired, then everything mudded, and yesterday I primed the whole. An exciting day.
Belatedly, I realized that I made a boo-boo. There is one corner bead in the pantry and, after fishing all the mudding, much of this cracked and easily flaked off. This is not good. Then, where there was a just finished sheetrock seam, it cracked. This is not good.
I tried to figure out what was going on. Then it hit me.
The new pantry and the refrigerator are all sitting on 2×6 joists. This, too, is not good.
Dumb Ross.
I went into the basement and temporally shored up the situation and now I am praying that…for the third time…the re-mudded corner bead will stay right.
Soon, soon, I will PAINT THE PANTRY! I am soooooooo excited about this.
Then I can begin installing beautiful pine trim I salvaged from a house being torn down a few years ago. I will refinish the trim before I install it.
On the west wall will go an old upper cabinet with glass doors which used to be in my current kitchen. Below, will be two 14-inch deep drawer units, which should arrive in early February.
Also on the west wall, and to the corner to the left, will be an area for a broom and vacuum.
On the east wall will go narrow pine shelving I will create for cans of soup and stuff.
When finished, the pantry will not only be beautiful but will offer a TON of storage, all the way up the 10-foot-high walls.
I anticipate an uptick in posts, and am looking forward to sharing the two kitchen paint colors I have selected which, no doubt, will create furious debate.

If you and Cody like the colors, then any additional participants in the debate are superfluous.
This does not mean that I will not join in.
Without even seeing them I can say that you can’t judge the colors until the house is done. I am sure that once it is all painted, papered, etc. that everything will look right. Or Ross will fix it. Or change his mind. So the color is what Ross and Cody want and that makes it fine with me.
But I am excited to see them.
And the pantry.
I’ve got a few plans of my own. Step one of my plan is to take the doors off the armoire in my parent’s hobby room to take home, strip and refinish and to take the drawers out of the bureau under the workbench in the garage and take those home to clean up and possibly refinish. Shellac for both. I’m hoping once done and my parent’s see them I’ll be given the green light to finish both pieces for “my room.” And once the bureau is done, I might get the big 40s mirror that is currently in my brother’s room to hand over it.
Gray is lovely.
Awww look at Gray….not a care in the world. My 4 dogs, 2 cats and pot bellied pig say hello from West Virginia. 🙂
I can’t wait to see the paint colors you’ve selected.
We are happy to hear from you, whenever and as often as you can. We appreciate that you share anything of your fabulous journey. Here’s to a happy, healthy, productive New Year!
I live/grew up in Emporia and drove by your houses yesterday …so I’m happy to hear of your continued progress. Any idea on completion of the curved lattice for the front porch? I’m most curious as to how that is done! I’ve been in the main house a couple of times in the past and would so like to visit it again if and when you might be hosting visitors. I admire your attention to detail and all your expertise on fixing issues that seem to come with each step of the renovation!
pro tip – after the corner bead is nailed on, run a piece of fiba tape along its length. voila! no more cracks.
I missed you! Thank you for this sign of life. And for the lovely photo of Gray.
I’m looking forward to seeing the paint colors. As long as you and Cody are happy, that’s the main thing.
Whew!!!
Thought I was gonna have to run over to Kansas and check for a pulse!!!
So so good to hear you are good! And busy as ever!
so good to hear from you. Glad things are great with the biz. Looking forward to future updates and pics. Gray is a beaut. 🙂
Hello Gray and Ross, the third time for mudding, ugh! always something to keep life interesting. I can’t wait to see the colors you have chosen. If you and Cody like them, that’s all that matters. Looking forward to seeing the finished pantry
Yay! So glad you are back. We missed you!
All sounds great. Glad the lighting biz is doing so well!
It’s wonderful to read your Cross House and Carriage House adventures.
Thanks and hugs!
Glad you are still blogging. I cannot be unhappy about your business doing well. I keep visiting your website and drooling over lights that I cannot justify until higher priority projects are complete.
I found your blog and website after we bought a Connecticut house this past year. It was built c. 1763. It has had major work done several times. After 1890 it had a large addition added. Late in the 1900s it had an enclosed porch and 3 car garage added. The only original features are the wide plank hardwood floors (walnut) and some hand made door hardware that looks to have been repurposed into the addition.
However, the house is solid, no moisture in the basement and we replaced the roof and changed from fuses to breakers. We are looking at it as not locking us into a specific period for the look. So we are just going for what we like (hence the drooling over your lights).
