Shiny Sill!

As with some other south-facing window sills, two of the octagon sills are just shot. This sill? I restored it in 2014. It looked perfect. I did all the right things with a 2-part epoxy and consolidate “juice”. But the sun just baked it to death. Even the window sash, which looked perfect in 2014, looks bad. It was primed and painted with latex. I realized this mistake several years ago, and switched to oil-base primer, and oil-base finish paint. This is holding up better. In 2021, I plan to bring these sashes down to bare wood, and repaint. Sigh. Luckily, the oil-based glazing is holding up.

Few things in life bring me greater joy than computer-crimped new sills. The outer corners are soldered.

In order to get the metal sill covers in place, the bottoms of the vertical trims need to be cut short. Because the bottoms were rotted, I did not reinstall them but replaced them with PVC (the white bits).

I will only paint the vertical edges of the new sill. Any paint on the horizontal surfaces will just peel off because of the intensity of the sun. This cannot be seen from ground level.

If not for the metal sill covers, the entire window frames would need to come out (a huge amount of work), and the sills replaced. I did this to two windows in the SE corner. This new method is vastly quicker. Only time will show if it is a good idea.

It’s SO disappointing when you have made the repair and then a few years later it has to be done again. Good solution with the metal sills, you gotta do, what you gotta do.

I love those metal sill covers. Are they crazy expensive?
