Small Excitements

Ta-da! The many many many layers of paint are gone from one side of the small library door. The darker areas are the old shellac. This should come off with denatured alcohol.
As the door was originally the basement door it would have been just shellaced. The original, and long lost, library door would have had a faux bois ‘cherry’ finish originally. I do not have the skills to recreate this so I plan to re-shellac the door.

They do have various shades of shellac, some very dark.
I see some lovely wood grain emerging, there. Maybe you could experiment with a suitable stain to enhance it.
Happy to see you solved the mystery and got the many layers of paint off the door. It will be beautiful when finished, and will tell yet another story of the house when it’s in place.
This door is going to look lovely!
The wood on the small library door is beautiful. It will look great when it’s done and put in place.
I think that not painting the door with “faux bois” is consistent with your historical approach: future owners will know that this door was not originally there, and might even guess the original location thanks to the shellac.
An appropriate shade of shellac will make the door less conspicuous against the “faux” cherry, if that is what you want.
