The Fabulous Mary

Today, I received a note from Cindi M, informing me that Mary Garner-Mitchell, a long-time commenter on Restoring Ross, had passed away due to cancer.

I gasped.

Mary and I have been privately corresponded since this blog was created in 2014. I adored her. Last year she wrote about her cancer diagnosis, and in December let me know that everything looked promising. “On the whole I’m feeling really good and my stamina is returning!  Thank the Lord!!!”

Curiously, Mary has been on my mind for a week, and I was planning to reach out and say hello.

Here’s a lovely story about Mary.

The fabulous Mary.

Dear Ross, I am very sorry that your friend has passed away. As much as it’s a part of life, loosing someone we love is a blow that we never expect. When I wrote to you about loosing my friend to cancer a couple of years ago, your kind words and understanding were a balm to my ragged heart. Your friend will live on in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved her. She won’t truly be gone as long as someone remembers her.

You know that someone is an extraordinary person when reading their obituary makes you sad that you never got the chance to meet them. My heart goes out to you, and her family and friends who must surely be grieving her loss.

I read the story about Mary, “a force of nature” it seems. I would have loved to have known her. What wonderfully special memories you, her friends, and family have to cherish. Memories become a treasure now.

What a beautiful tribute to an amazing woman. How blessed you were to know her. As an avid thrifter, and jewelry maker, I believe Mary’s wearing the piece of colander earrings in the photo her husband took of her in Lucca, Italy.

Oh my…it seems as if we all knew her just from the beautiful picture that accompanied her posts. She seemed to me to be a classy, gorgeous woman. And her home sounded cool too. So sad for someone so young and full of vitality! And though I didnt know her personally, it seems like a bright spark of light is now lost for this blog. My heart goes out to you Ross. To hear this sad news was so unexpected.

I agree with Linda that I felt like I “knew her from the blog posts.” She always seemed so lovely and I wish I.had the pleasure of knowing her better. She sounds just wonderful!

The world lost such a wonderful treasure when she passed away. Such a wonderful, talented, beautiful vital person who lived life to the fullest!

I only hope she didn’t suffer too badly and that she is at peace. May she Rest In Peace.

Thank you dear Ross for sharing.

I’m saddened to hear of her passing, and I’m mourning her loss, though we never met in person. Thanks for sharing the article — it made me realize what I missed having never met her.
